It's interesting because I could have sworn I saw a Super Bowl commercial years ago that RadioShack was "making a come back." LOL

For me and probably lots of others, I buy all my electronic stuff on eBay, Mouser or Digikey. There's a really great eBay seller that has pre-made RFC spec cable stuff and I've bought from him many times. I think it's safe to say brick and mortar is having a hard time...

On the other hand, I used to love asking the RadioShack employee to do a district and regional search for scanners that they just discontinued. I once got a super hot deal on a handheld (don't remember the model, could have been a Pro-64) where a regional search showed one on the shelf in Texas. It was the only one in the country apparently and I scarfed it up - and at a cheaper price, too! LOL

I worked at Radio Shack from 1981 to 1986. In the store where I worked, I also was the communications guy, CB's, scanners, antennas etc., and ordered all the crystals. I treated people with respect, didn't jump on them as soon as they came in, tried to answer questions with common sense and correct information. I basically treated everyone the way I wanted to be treated when I shopped somewhere. I feel I did a great job and enjoyed my experience very much. I left for the military in 86 and it was sad what the company turned into in later years. If they do come back in some form it will never be like it was back then.

Wonder if they'll change their mottos; "You've got questions---we've got cell phones" and "You've got questions---we haven't a clue".
While each employee was required to successfully complete a series of certification courses to familiarize themselves with the product lines, these courses didn't go into great depth. These courses were periodically refreshed while new ones were issued as new products came to market. As you can imagine though, becoming familiar enough with any given SKU when there were literally thousands of items in each store was just not possible. Personally, I found that product ownership contributed to my knowledge level a great deal. But then, there are only so many RS products one person can be expected to buy. It was not uncommon to encounter hard core hobbyists with a greater knowledge level on certain subjects than we had.

RadioShack was made for a time before the Internet was invented. You couldn't ask Google nor could you rely on forums like this to provide the answers you needed. Your recourse was to visit your local electronics store and pick an employee's brain, and just hope that employee had something to contribute.

Per the Retail Insight Network linked article below (dated 09-04-2023): "The beloved 80s retailer, once on the brink of extinction, is staging a remarkable comeback under new ownership."

Nice, polished release for Unicomer, which now owns 100% of the Radio Shack IP.
The Radio Shack we knew is never ever coming back. Unicomer has a pretty good network of RS stores
in Latin/South America, and they look like this:

So, pining for the days of hopping in and picking up some capacitors to replace in the power supply of that ancient Dell computer with Windows98 on it because you "Paid over 2k for it", isn't likely to happen.

Will it be resistors, capacitors, coax, CBs, 7400 series ICs and a battery card? Or cell phones and stuffed toys?
We had a Radio Shack in the shopping center next to our TV station. I walked over there many times to pick up parts to repair equipment or build items we needed. Their printed circuit boards were used in many of my projects.

When I worked at WLNE in providence RI the one in the shopping mall around the corner from the station was treated like a stock room.

Radio Shack was awesome when I was a teenager, wiring up driving lights to my car, or a wireless microphone to my CB PA speaker. Could talk through that car PA with my wireless mic from several hundred feet away. Last time I was in a Radio shack though, it was cellphones and t-shirts, and going under fast.

Great short video on Radio Shack.

Last time I was in a 'Shack they were having their going out of business sale, I bought a bunch of antennas (800 MHZ and the center loaded telescopic ones) for half price. I kept one of each in original packaging, using the rest to this day. I miss RS and Sears. The Sears stores in my area were way more pitiful in its last few years. 3 floors of mechandise and probably 4 customers between them every time I went there.
