• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

P1225 or M1225?

Last time I programmed either one I used a RIB box and the appropriate cable.

I've had no problems programming the M1225 from an XP computer using the Motorola ribless serial cable, part number RKN4081.

The programming software I DL for the '1225 from Motorola will do USB.

You have to ensure you have the proper "USB/serial" driver installed on your computer for the cable to work properly.

Also, what version of Win are you running? I believe there are 2 different versions of software on the MOT site for different versions of Windows.

Actually, the two different versions of the 1225 software are for Conventional and LS models. Both are the most current releases, Version 4.0, and were specifically released to support Windows XP. They can be found in the Resource Center under Two Way, Discontinued Products.

In short no. Only the new stuff you can program with just a USB straight to the radio. But using a serial to USB adapter should have no effect on weather or not you need a rib. If you bought one of those 5 in 1 cables on eBay, they will have the rib circuit built in. You may just need to add a 9volt battery.

All this talk about people ribless versus ribbed is irreverent, because programming uses a serial port whether or not if it's a ribless cable or not! If your using a serial to USB adapter you may just need to install the driver if you haven't done so already!

Good luck!

One thing to watch out for with USB to RS232 adapters is the com port the software or windows assigns. I have a Hawking which works well but it seems to default to com 7 on windows 7, some of the radio software programs will let you use this, others only want to use 1 - 4, so you must make that change, usually in the device manager in windows.
