• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Thanks for videos! Have you been having any problems decoding APRS on the 880G?
My radio not decoding packets correctly, or more often, not decoding at all. All appropriate setting are on (and different permutations were tried too) I’m on FW 61C7 v1.15 250612 and CPS 61A6 v1.08

I can hear the classic APRS sounds for the speaker, and have never correctly decoded anything.

Any advice?

If nothing else, thank you for taking the time to read this :D

GPS and APRS additions teardown video board version 2.

Initial teardown of non GPS version 1.
For those who find this:

APRS DOES NOT FUNCTION ON RT-880G
It has not been (fully) implemented by the engineers at Radtel, so if you buy this for APRS, you will be VERY VERY disappointed.
IT IS INCAPABLE OF ENCODING OR DECODING APRS

[Mods: yes, I do have more proof than “my radio doesn’t work” I have emailed Radtel about this]

I don't think the mods really care.
I prefer err on the side of caution. Plus I saw the boiler plate “your comment is awaiting mod approval”, so here we are.

Thanks for the info though! :D

That would explain the multitude of comments and questions I've seen surrounding the APRS on the 880g.

I’ve searched many times and have not found a thread about APRS on the RT-880G or the UV-98plus (I emailed iRadio about their model’s APRS today).

M0FXB did a video about APRS on the 880G and he wasn’t able to get it to receive, though I THINK he was able transmit to an FT-3DR. His, and one other, are the only videos I’ve seen (and I’ve seen A LOT) which mention that the APRS is broken. That’s is almost suspicious…

I could be wrong, but if no other video reviews mention that the APRS is nonfunctional then they either didn’t test it or chose to not include that part. And that’s a really bad look.

I bought this radio specifically because I saw it in YT videos saying how great it is, and that it does APRS.

Since the company said they don’t have APRS implemented, I don’t think my unit broken.

If you happen to see any more instances of APRS working or not working, feel free to post it here :]

FB is filled with posts about non-functioning APRS. You can find it easily yourself.
Frick! I meant to add a caveat about Facebook! 😅

I’m gunna preface my upcoming statement with: this a whole bunch of my own self-induced problem, I know lol.

I don’t have a facebook account, and the only way to make an account is to give them a facial scan (the quality and type allows for real world facial recognition tracking), which is something I’m super hyped about giving them.

I did try to make an account just now, and implemented a few options for heavily degrading the quality of the input facial scan. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just have live without knowing what’s on facebook about the RT-880G, which does sincerely make me sad.

So in some sense, my initial statement was untrue, but in literal terms I couldn’t find anything because all Facebook links are dead for me.

Have you looked under the battery to see if it it has the GPS/APRS sticker? Even if it does have it, it's entirely possible that your radio only has the GPS board added. Seems like a lot of those popped up in Europe.

Hm… interesting idea.

It has the APRS + GPS sticker, under the battery, but I’m pretty much at the point where I either physically inspect the PCBs, or return it and maybe get a new one.

Also, my FB account creation attempt got denied. That’s one email burned :/
