I'm in Ashe Co. and keep hearing RAF AWACS and F-15's that sound like they are on routine type patrol/missions. Where are they based at here in the SE U.S.? I know by their call signs their home base back in the UK.

I know where SJ is - these F-15's and E-3d's are most positively British ! The F-15's are with the 48th FW out of Lakenheath(call signs Bullseye/Bravo/Bolar) and the AWACS are from Waddington UK(call sign Magic). 2 of these Limey F-15's blew over my neighborhood not 500 feet off the deck back in July/August! My guess would be SJ or Pope but since we get daily traffic from U.S. AWACS from Tinker over in OK these limeys could be based anywhere. Just curious............

You know what? You may be right. We're in the middle of Red Flag out here in Las Vegas. I'm not sure if ACC would have two exercises on at the same time though. But it is a possibility........

I hear these British chaps all the time on 364.200, 343.750 and a few others. Today I saw 6-10 Army/NG Choppers spaced about 5 minutes apart going W to E at approx. 8-10,000 ft. which is a little odd. We had a major simulated Nuke terror attack drill that ended a couple days ago involving VA/SC and I saw articles about urban warfare training in VA/Ohio/TX so there are alot of drills/exercises going on these days. Today a British AWACS was vectoring a British F 15 on 2 hostiles somewhere and thats all I heard - should have turned the scanner on earlier! I am not too far from both SJ and Pope and get alot of refueling activity involving F16's from Langley. I even heard a B 52 getting a drink of fuel a few days ago.

Flyin Gas Tanks

235.100, 276.500 and 324.600 are the busiest for air refueling in WNC, and most of the work is done by the 134th ARG outa Knoxville, TN or 434th ARG outa Grissom AFB in Indiana. Of course we are directly beneath AR 216 too.
