• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hello, I'm new so of my post is against the forum rules please let me know. I have a set of Realistic TRC-217 Hand held Walkie Talkie/Radios & I have no use for them. How much should I ask for the 2 of them? Any suggestions would be helpful.
Is a license required to operate the TRC-217 ?

Those are from the late 80s. I doubt you would get $5 or $10 for the pair, if anything at all.

No license is required. They operate on the CB band.

That all depends on condition, if they work on both receive and transmit, if they have original box etc. All of that affects price but they aren't worth a whole lot. They are decent radios from the time. The best advice I have is look them up on ebay and match the price there for the condition yours are in.

CBs no longer need licenses to operate.

@brendamerritt I own a couple of those TRC-217 models as well, they have troubles with the knobs for volume and squelch due to age and dust and light corrosion but they are otherwise great units, I have squeezed as much as 6 miles out of them (albeit with a lot of static).

If you have paypal I might be interested in adding a couple more to my collection, feel free to send me a PM or if you decide to list on ebay maybe post a link to your ebay post here and depending on the amount maybe I'll bid or do the buy-it-now if you offer that option.

Like Dave said depending on what accessories and condition and all that, I've seen some that were really beat up and the antennas really loose and partially bend, scratched up, knobs don't really work like I described above needing disassembly and deoxit applied, those ones aren't worth a heck of a lot in that condition. I've paid $20-$25 in the past few months for my two 217s in decent condition, tight straight antennas but minor problems with the knobs, no accessories or box, if that helps.

I don't need two more but a row of four would look nice on my shelf  I actually have another one somewhere but can't find it lately.
