Folks, I come before the court hoping for an explanation. Can you take a look at this license. Obviously not a hotbed of scanner action but the joint is in my neighborhood and I thought I might try to program something not in the database.

The license says Conventional so I take that to mean it’s not trunked. All the frequencies say MO so that looks like a group with portable radios, right?

When I simply program the frequencies as a conventional group and scan them, there’s activity on two of them. They show as DMR transmissions with color codes and time slots.

But they also display talkgroup IDs. I always thought talkgroups were a child of trunked systems but I’m sure I could be wrong.

Please go easy on me and give me the explanation. Is there any possible programming element here? Of have I stumbled on the best that can be done by just listing and scanning the set of conventional frequencies?

Many thanks. Stay well.

DMR (also P25) can have talkgroups on conventional repeaters or simplex, not just trunked.

The picture is too small for me to see anything. It's better to post a link to the license (FCC web site or RR).

Looks like a bunch of simplex 5 watt frequencies. Probably portable radios used around the college for different things. Maintenance, security, ballgames etc.

It's 6 conventional (non-trunked) simplex channels with 40 5 watt radios which probably means hand helds. Emission designators are both DMR and narrow FM.

Actually I think DMR and P25 are required to use talkgroups but I don't have that much experience with programming software. Most of the time for something like that they use talkgroup 1, which is probably the default.

I have never seen anything but talkgroup 1 used on P25 conventional systems around here.

The fcc is not bringing up the actual license for me, so I don't see actual emission authorized. But I would put it in your scanner in search for the type of of mode. Let the scanner determine what it is.

And thanks to all of you.

I guess assumed talkgroups were something generated and administered by a centralized controller. But these days I suppose it’s nothing for the handhelds to have the software and capability. Always learning. Thanks again.
