Its too bad uniden built such a nice radio that doesnt work, at least for me. Im a little upset at the moment that it doesnt function properly for my application, I am curious to know if another model with alpha tags will work? if so ill sell this one, its brand new so I shouldnt have any trouble selling it to someone who can use it and still get my money back and get one that will work

I wouldn't get rid of it if I were you.. these models of radios (246, 396, 996, etc) have the ability to be updated by a firmware upload, so Uniden can release a 'patch' to fix this problem. It's possible you have uncovered a previously-unseen bug in the 246's trunking code, and once Uniden sorts it out, they'll surely release a firmware update to address it.

I sent a note to the Uniden product manager, Paul Opitz (UPman), who hangs out on RR quite a bit - his private message box was full, so I had to send email instead. In any case, I made him aware of this situation, and hopefully he's checking his email today and will have an answer for us eventually. :)

For what it's worth, if you have your heart set on dumping the 246, I can't say for sure that the 396 and 996 wouldn't have the very same problem. So quite frankly if you're looking for a replacement that will work now rather than later, I think you're restricted to finding a way to get the newer Radio Shack models shipped to you from the USA.

I probably wont get rid of it...I like it too much, Ill just wait and see what The Uniden boys have to say about it and no resolution is made, I will concider getting rid of it then every scanner i have owned has been a uniden...even the RS scanners I have owned were produced by uniden so will it make much of a difference?

Good luck with that!

If you feel like giving yourself extra work, it WILL be possible for you to figure out which talkgroups belong to which agencies/groups/districts. Just put the scanner manually on a certain frequency and wait till you hear something, then watch the Unitrunker screen to see what talkgroup it says it is. Then you can either write it down or type it up or however you prefer.. and submit it to the DB for everyone to use. :)

Update from UNIDEN
----------------------------------------
Updated 10/25/2006 09:47 AM:
According to our product manager, the earliest this could be resolved is with the rebanding update which is not due out until next spring. Even then he couldn't confirm that it would resolve your issue.

Sincerely,

You may respond to this message to update your question.

That sucks. It's unfortunate it isn't a more widespread issue, in order to get more attention. I mean, if problems with Detroit warrant an update all by itself, you'd think other places would deserve the same response.

There are 2 systems in red deer 371D and C724 I dont know much about the second one (C724) as it has just showed up in the last little while. I believe it is used by the Nova Chemicals/Joffree Plant but I am unsure...an update will follow soon as to what the frequencies and ID's are for this system. So far I have a control channel on either 858.9125 or 860.5625 and only 1 ID that is 8272

I do hear them...there is some static but it is coming in...my 92xlt doesnt recieve the control channel at all so using unitrunker for info is out but my 246 is working so i have it setup to do ID search and have been recording info as i go...Joffree/Dow/Prentiss are within a few KM's of eachother and are connected to eachother via pipeline

I'd put money on that being Dow then. And it's 19 km, not 30.. Google Earth was messing with my ruler/distance measurements.

I'll fire that into the DB in a bit.. good eye and keep up the good work :)

I am in red deer and can not pick up any red deer city traffic with my PRO97. I do hear what sounds like a diesel truck idliing and occasionally there is some talk, but it is verry inconsistent.

Is it even possible to hear red deer city with a PRO97?

(I am a newbie so please excuse my ingnorance if the answer to this is obvious)

I have a live scanner at mms://206.75.79.52:8080 thats has the city tuned in. As for your own Program your scanner with a conventional system with frequencies 866.0500, 866.3000,866.5500,867.0500,867.5500,868.0500,868.5500. Lock out the one that sound like a diesel truck and if you can shut the channel delay off. Just a note that the channel changes every night at 11 so you will have to lock it out and open the one previously locked out. I am having problems getting it to trunk track properly because of the bandplan that the city uses...its off by .125khz hope this helps

Red Deer Trunk

So I am in Red Deer for 2 days and even my 330 handheld won't lock onto a correct frequency. It does the same as mentioned above, it will flash the id's but that's it. Has this ever been figured out by anyone?

So I thought I would bring this backup to the top of the list again. Jay does it look like the new BCD39XT will work on the Red Deer Trunk system?????

There's no indication of what the "rebanding update" will do for the 396 when it's released tomorrow (later today really) ... Paul Opitz (UPMan) would be a better person to ask.

I would suspect that the 396XT would do everything the 396T will with the new firmware update.
