RELM Wireless announced it has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Forest Service for two-way radio products. The contract provides for an initial base period of May 17, 2007, through the end of the federal fiscal year on September 30, 2007, for an estimated $200,000 worth of radio products, according to the company.

This should shake up all of the anti-RELM folks around here. I've seen several federal folks with BK radios so it should come as no surprise.

BK Radios

We used BK radios on our forest, I don't think the Forest service uses anything else but BK.
I know the repeaters we used were Danials.

They've been known to use Thales in the past. I have one of their old radios. They've since abandoned the brand.

wayne, I don't think I have ever seen one...
They used them in California. The radio still had the original programming in it; rather distinct too.

They abandonded the Thales25 ?

I wish they would start hitting the used market. I desperately need a battery but I can't bring myself to shell out $225.

Vertex served me well. Dropped it at car accidents. Had it in my bunker gear, on structure fires. It got wet, dirty...and still worked like a new one.

The only company to my knowledge that now manufactures handhelds with Lithium-ion batterys. Thus no memory problems with batterys, and the usual fully discharging batterys worry, and the worry of charge, use for an hour, charge...use for an hour?

Peeked in a WV State Fire Marshals vehicle awhile back. 1 Uhf radio, a Vhf High band radio, and a Vhf Low band radio ( 3 all together ) in the durango. All Vertex. ( Why not a uhf/vhf dual band radio - lessening the space, and probably cost ...is beyond me? )

I used Bendix King when I was in the Army Reserves. They did not impress me. I recall two that had problems with moisture.

Motorola overseas. I had a generic handheld ( The Motorola that sticks in the mobile in the vehicle ;and uses the crystals off of the portable, and charges at the same time ; Push a release buttion and the handheld pops out - and the base is no longer usable )- used that, then I got issued a Sabre. Big and bulky, the encryption section of the radio made it longer than I cared for. Only a few electronic glitches in the Motorola.
