Did you try Mouser for parts/cables and such? Mouser Electronics - Electronic Component Distributor

Mouser has been my primary parts supplier for the last 8 years. The cables I need are special length and that is why I am dealing overseas to get those made. For the head end, the power cable is about 10cm and the data cable is about 8cm. For the radio end, the data cable is user supplied since it comes with the RH96 head. I will supply a 12" mono patch cable for the audio connection.

Monster awesome impressive.

Seriously... good work,

Thanks for all of the kind compliments! I am working hard to get this ready for big time. I have a couple of factors out of my control, holding things up. Again, more news when I have it.

Hi,
First let me say,,, How do I get a set? I want one as well. This looks like the answer I have been looking for. Great idea!!!

One question though. While I do not really understand how a GPS improves or helps scanning, I have been playing with one and have successfully connected a GPS to my 396XT. Does your set up give me that option?

Thanks

You need to configure your scanner to utilize the GPS feature which is already built in to the scanner. This hardware is strictly for connecting a BC-RH96 remote head to a compatible scanner. See: Uniden Scanner GPS Features - The RadioReference Wiki for more information on the GPS features of Uniden scanners.

Aliby19 already did a good job answering your question, but if interested, I have a GPS module I am working on to install internally of the 996(XT) mobile. The 396 is the handheld, so the module would not do you any good. Just thought I might mention I have somthing else in the works.

Once I get past getting this remote head kit on the market, I will start on the GPS module and depending on response, I will make that available as well.

EDIT: That reminds me, I am still looking for anyone to submit some pictures of the INSIDE of the 996. Both sides would be nice. I need to see how much free room there is and how well access to the back panel is open for mounting the GPS antenna connector.

A post by UPMan in another thread states that the remote head and the GPS cannot be used simultaneously. You may need to determine whether the conflict is due to the port being used or if there is other shared components.

CG -- I stand corrected. Yes, that is the case. You can only use a BCD396XT with one external accessory, either the RH-96 or a GPS unit with it but not both at the same time.

This is due to the fact that the BCD396XT only has one serial port and when connecting it to the RH-96, you end up using that port up.

Thank you for the clarification.

This has probably been asked before, but what are the dimensions of the boards? I know that you aren't going to provide enclosures do to cost factors, but I'm trying to get an idea of what I need in regards to a case.

This is all true for the 396(XT) handheld, but the mobile 996(XT) can use both at the same time. The RH-96 is interfaced through the front panel programming port and the GPS is interfaced through the back panel DB9 port.

I might have answered this before, but the answer would not be valid anymore. So it's good that you asked :)

The head-end board was slimmed down so the size changed:

Head-End (L x W): 42mm x 38mm
Scanner-End (L x W): 50mm x 42mm

If you don't care about seeing the LED on the head-end, you could use some large heat shrink wrap to cover the board OR use the clear stuff and you can still see the LED :D

I didn't think about that large heat shrink stuff, but I like the one size fits all approach. Also, if I do it right I can use the heat shrink to hold the jumper cables in place.

Thanks for all of the responses on my GPS question.

Now I understand that by buying a 396XT, my mobile intentions are not as mobile as I thought I would be.

ANYWAY, I still would like a remote kit.

Thanks

I can't believe I missed this. Sing me up for one full set of the completed boards. What a great idea!

Get me one

I'd like to get one from you. I'll be using this to add an additional control point in my house. I'm going to use volume controls on two amplified external speakers with power switches and not use the volume control on the 996T or RH96. That way I can have the appropriate volume or off at each location upstairs and basement.
