Hi all,

I recently moved to the roanoke, va area and i'm trying to get a handle on why some freqs aren't coming through. I've read that roanoke city and county both have all law enforcement activity on encryption but i also cannot seem to receive county fire frequencies on my sds100. Is fire and rescue encrypted too? I've been able to receive clear transmission from salem fire/ems and city fire/ems but not much else outside of services and utilities. Any ideas?

For those areas there are two main systems in use, both are p25 trunked systems: STARS and RVRS.

Well looking at the statewide STARS system it seems that there is mixed use of encryption for the listed talkgroups. For Roanoke County the county police are all encrypted but the county sheriff is not. Roanoke City police are all encrypted but Roanoke City Sheriff is not encrypted. Roanoke County Fire and Rescue is all encrypted however, that's why nothing is heard on your sds100.

Besides the two p25 trunked systems, on the Roanoke County page Roanoke County, Virginia (VA) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference, there are some rescue and law enforcement talkaround channels that are on conventional frequencies and not encrypted.

The RVRS system info is from this page: Roanoke Valley Radio System (RVRS) Trunking System, Various, Virginia
That STARS system info comes from this page: Virginia Statewide Agencies Radio System (STARS) Trunking System, Statewide, Virginia

Salem 1, on Virginia's STARS system, is not encrypted. This is used by VSP for 81 and 581.
