Large Grass Fire Prompts Evacuations
Fire Has Crossed Indiana Street

DENVER -- A fire broke out around 2 pm Sunday on the northwest side of the Denver metro area, near Highways 128 and 93, in the vicinity of Rocky Flats. Very strong west and northwest winds fueled the fire, growing to hundreds of acres within minutes. The winds pushed the flames over Indiana Street, toward the suburbs of Westminster and Broomfield.

The Walnut Creek Subdivision in Broomfield has been ordered to evacuate by reverse 911, and additional reverse 911 calls are being sent out to others in the area, warning of the developing situation. Residents are being evacuated to the Westmore Recreation Center, located at 108th and Oak.

Authorities are estimating at least 500 acres are on fire right now. An air tanker is en route from Albuquerque, New Mexico to help fight this fire.

Land in Boulder, Jefferson, and Broomfield counties have burned. The fire is 50% contained.

Authorities says over 100 firefighters are on the scene from eight different north metro agencies.

The fire is burning near the Jefferson County airport, but operations are not being affected as of last report.

Command post reporting fire is contained and actually back burning onto itself some.

Main ops remain on Mac-3 with all agencies except for Westminster patched in.

No media beging allowed access into Walnut Creek and Jeffco ICP set up on Hwy-128 just West of Indiana.
