Can anyone advise if there are any electronic shops in Rome (or the vicinity) that sell scanners, antennas, etc.?

I would guess there are but can't tell you for sure. Usually, large truck stops carry scanners. BUT LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING I"VE LEARNED FROM MANY YEARS OF BUYING SCANNERS! Retail stores are almost ALWAYS higher than internet sources because of overhead. That's not always true but it's true enough that I wouldn't waste my time looking locally. Get on the internet and look at Scannermaster, ScannerWorld, Communications Electronics, Bearcat Warehouse, Uniden Direct, etc. You'll get a better price and can even afford accessories that chances are the retail outlets don't carry.
