I own the radio shack discone antenna which does pretty well does the 20-176 out perform it

Well the discone would perform better at 800mhz and VHF-lo. I think both would probably perform about the same on VHF-hi/UHF.

Personally I would stick with the discone for wider frequency range.

<From the RS website> "Covers 108-1300MHz with peak performance occurring in the 152-470MHz range."

I have had a RS discone in the air for 5 years and it does well. I get excellent coverage of the CHP (39-46MHz) along with VHF/UHF and 800MHz.

I bought the smaller RS, and it is possibly worse than than the 800 Mhz handheld, (4 inch)
antenna is 20 feet up and under the end of the porch, so under the roof, I am only trying to get rid of the back ground noise, RD was $30 and a trial until I figure out what I need, thanks for any help.
