I've used a 2005/2006 for DSD and in the past trunker, having the display was not needed as you can set n forget and the radios now are so old that the LCD display back lights have well gone out.

I can tell you that changing the LCD backlight on a 2005 or 2006 is fairly easy. I've done it twice on my 2006. Search RR's database on Google and you should be able to find instructions and sources.

More stuff if you feel like tinkering:

I can't take credit for any of this. I guess, I'm what you would call a digital or Dropbox hoarder :)

I don't know if there are any still available, but back in the 90's I used to chat with Bill Cheek on Fidonet, he was the author of the "Scanner Modification Handbooks". The guy was nice, brilliant, and rather humble. He helped a lot of people back in the day and had lots of mods for the Radio Shack scanners, which I think most were built by GRE in the later years.

So here is a question. I have a Pro 2006 with a dim display that needs to be replaced.
I don't have time nor the resources to replacement myself at this time but would be willing to pay to have it
replaced should anyone know a reputable place to get it done.
Thanks for any heads up as for right now it is just sitting on the shelf unused.

I appreciate the offer and if you are really offering I might take you up on it if nothing else closer comes to pass.
I would, of course, pay for all needed parts and labor.

Hey Marshall!

I replaced the backlight in my 2004 years ago, and my 2006 needs a new one. I could do yours as well. Fuquay NC isn’t far from you! I’m sure you remember our Debonair flight a few years ago Out of RDU.

Hey Chris! Hope all is well! Yeah I would appreciate it brother.
I would, of course, compensate you for parts & labor/time and I am just up the road in Garner.
Feel free to reach out to me directly (MSherard@gmail.com) and we will work something out.
Thanks!
