• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Honestly, on those analog frequencies I cannot tell a difference in reception quality from the SDS100, probably due to the strong signal.
You would certainly notice the difference if there was another strong signal nearby. The 'fengs and other CCRs are very easily overloaded.

Wow, I don't know how long << THIS UV5R8W BUNDLE >> will last on Amazon, but I thought it prudent to post it here in case anyone wanted an awesome deal. It comes with everything pictured here EXCEPT the cell phone, for only $15.49. Which could make a nice Christmas present for someone. Now whether you trust a Chinese APP on your phone or not is up to you.

UV-17R for only $18.39, if you want one, act fast! << AMAZON LINK >>
Sure, it probably spits out harmonics like a firehose spits out water, but if you only want to LISTEN to analog frequencies, how can you go wrong?

No, the USB cable is just for charging the battery if you are away from the drop-in charger that comes with it. If you want to program it via computer you will need << THIS CABLE >> for an additional 10 bux.

Is that a 2 LED flashlight now on the bottom? Wow! That's definitely the sign of a great radio. :D :D

Gimmicks, aka "features", sell. Technical quality is not important.

It's like automobiles made in the U.S. in the 1950s. You want chrome plating and fins? Yeah, we got that! You want passenger safety or fuel-efficient engines? Well, um, look at our chrome plating and fins!

So many suggestions for radios that do not receive the aviation band. Reading is fundamental.

My Baofengs receive the civil air band just fine.

Lots of people don't care one bit about listening to aircraft.

Reading is next to useless without proper research and demographic information.

There are also newbies that are not always aware of the step rate of 12.5 in that band, so when the radio locks onto a frequency, it's not center, so they think it receives like garbage. Either know thy frequency and input it, or scan starting at the right place with the proper step rate.

Just for the record, the 5RM goes into AM mode on the aircraft frequencies and does a fair job of it.
