My money is on you will buy another battery. Batteries are consumables, always have been, probably will be for awhile yet.

This isn't just a Uniden thing. Maybe google up lithium batteries and swelling. There are several different lithium battery chemistries and they all have strengths and weaknesses.
I may buy one some time. It would be nice if Uniden had more responsive and relevant support. As mentioned in my OP I mainly use the scanner on my desk so busy running it off USB power. Now and again when there is action it's nice to take the scanner portable. With the battery out it's a bit top heavy so I wrapped up some fishing sinkers and put them in the battery cavity. Sits nice and solid on my desk now.

Does that keep the battery charged? I sold my SDS100(s) a long time ago, so I don't recall. Anyway, if it does this could be part of the swollen battery cause.

Fix the problem yourself if you feel there is a hazard. Buy a SDS200 and sell the SDS100 to avoid "this potentially hazardous situation".

Can you run a portable Uniden scanner while the batterey is pluged in and recharging or do the batteries havve to be recharged in a separate charging accessory. Looking at either a sds100 or a 536hp

The SDS100 comes with an adapter capable of running and charging the scanner at the same time... As mentioned above...

I also use Unidens External battery charger too... I have two battery's for my 100...

I keep 4 high cap batteries charged with the external charger, rotating to always have a fresh one (or two). Never once used any other power source. After a few years of use, with the radio and all batteries mostly staying in the truck with our 100 deg heat, finally I had one swell last week. There is no telling how many times it's been cycled. I've had "name brand" double A's fair far wore in similar conditions. Rechargeable lithium batteries have a limit of crap it can take. Frankly, all batteries do. Especially not so luxuriously made ones.

I'm actually surprised they took the abuse. So this is a 4.5 star review.

Wasn't there a SDS battery shell that used AA's ? Or maybe I'm thinking of another scanner ,,,

I have owned four of these damn things. Yes, they are wonderful, when they work. I sent one back to Uniden. At present, I own two. Both were working fine. One started having a nervous breakdown.

Hopefully, folks won't experience this problem. If this malfunctions, it will stop charging. Sometimes, it will work when you jack around with it. The first sign that something is seriously fcuekd up is when the charging light starts alternating between red and green. I wish I could buy the charger alone without having to buy the battery with it.

I wish someone would come up with a better battery charger than this piece of crap.

I see a lot of speculation on why these are expanding. We already know why... Cell phones use the same batteries and have the same problem. Have an old iPad or phone sitting around? It's a ticking time bomb! It could swell, blow, leak, and start a fire and kill your family.
My 4-year-old IPAD exploded and cracked its screen last year. The problem was I wasn't charging it regularly/keeping it charged. It can still happen anyway, but charging keeps these from internal off-gassing building up, causing the bulge.

SEE YOUTUBE VIDEOS BELOW.
Mine exploded today and broke off the battery clip, which flew across the room and killed my parrot. I should know better because I know how to solve this: Keep your batteries charged. I should have known better because this was already addressed as a known issue.

I cannot wait for someone else to make scanners. It won't happen, but I would jump ship so fast and hope and pray that Uniden gets its comeuppance and goes out of evil business. Shame on you, Uniden.
Thousand dollar scanner. Plus, $150 for "upgrade" bands. $80 for a replacement battery. $25 for a replacement door. Seriously though, this is dangerous to our homes and lives, not to mention we paid money maybe only 1-3 years ago.

Follow up.
I called Uniden. Teresa, I think? She told me to get bent. I will jump in on a class-action suit against Uniden! Anyone else?

Somehow I have a feeling no one at Uniden told you to “get bent”…but I could be wrong.

I called Uniden today about a 436 that had been dropped and had no sound through the speaker but had good audio through the headphone jack. They stated that the move had them really backed up but started the repair for me this week. This is the 3rd week they had it. The lady was very nice and helpful and also stated they were sorry about the backlog from the move. I thanked her and hung up.

Isn't that a known issue, that the springy metal strips from the speaker are pushing on a contact surface on the circuit board but could get knocked out of place if you drop the scanner? Just open it up and adjust the metal strips location by bending them back again.

@Ubbe Yes it is that is why I took the scanner apart and checked that before returning it for repair. It was aligned as it should be so that was not the problem. This is a scanner that belongs to a friend that I take care of and it is not the 1st fall for the scanner.

Lithium batteries are known for this. They brought down a cargo plane which is why they are "prohibited" on airlines. I honestly don't know what the solution is except to keep a close eye on them.
