In the past month or so, I've been hearing alot of one-sided encypted transmissions. Encinitas Dispatch, Vista, Escondido, and some Tac channels. What's the deal? Seems like officers are accidently hitting the ENCRYPT button on their radios...if indeed that's what they have.

I can understand encrypting SWAT, or surveillance on BOTH SIDES, but not one sided.

Any ideas?

I hope its not a sign of things to come. I have not personally heard encryption on any dispatch or tac channels but I hear it used on...

Sheriff SID Intel (always encrypted when I hear it)
Sheriff DES Wide1 (some encryption but plenty in the clear)
DA Special Ops TG
Chula Vista Narcotics (nearly 100% encrypted on weekends)
Chula Vista Inv Tacs (some encryption use)
El Cajon PD Inv Tacs (heard 1 sided encryption comms between Vice units)

Believe it or not most of the SWAT operations I've heard have not been encrypted. I found it kind of surprising.

On Dispatch channels? How sure are you of this?

We aren't going to be seeing encryption full-time on Dispatch or Tac channels. I'm pretty sure of it. That's a LOT of radios to go around and hand keyload.

Encryption adds delay to the audio. Delayed audio can be very bad in SWAT operations.

APCO 25 creates a delay in transmissions. Just as today's cellphones do.

And if a signal is APCO 25 anyway, I don't believe adding encryption to this mix adds any additional perceivable delay. The fact that the signal is digital already added all the delay.

True that. And when split-seconds count, I'd take an anolog radio over APCO 25. But monitoring digital systems while driving is great...don't have to be annoyed by static. But I prefer normal FM mode while listening at home.
