I've noticed the past few days (at the WInchester & Los Gatos Stations) Truck 5 has become Truck 85
and Engine 3 and Rescue 3 have become Engine 83 and Rescue 83. I tried searching the internet and
have found nothing. So, I thought I would try the experts here and see if anyone knows when it will be completed and maybe the reason(s) why? Also, any other agencies changing their equipment numbers?
Thanks.

My understanding is that the Santa Clara County Fire Chiefs association decided to have all apparatus renumbered in the county so that there will not be any duplication in numbers. This is supposed to be effective January 1 2014. With the new numbering there will no longer be a need to state the city and apparatus number when responding on mutual aid, or auto aide calls within the county. In other words if San Jose engine 14 is responding on county fire primary to an auto aide call they will no longer have to say San Jose engine 14 during a transmission, they can simply say engine 14, and everyone will know its a San Jose engine. Over all this should make radio traffic flow a little smoother.

This is another example of the more things change the more they stay the same as this is pretty much how it was in Santa Clara County many years ago. If my memory serves me correctly, Milpitas FD was the 80's numbers, Mt View was the 50's, Sunnyvale the 40's, Los Altos the 70's.

It will be frustrating for all concerned for awhile. Old habits die hard. I'm sure we will hear lots of wrong apparatus numbers being used for awhile. Truck 5 County Fire, Oops I mean Truck 85 County fire!

trooperdude, thanks for the info. Much appreciated. It's probably going to take a while to get it all done.

FWIW... SNY stations with multiple engines are using the 2 before the 40-46 designator. In the old days station 3, 4 & 6 had a "squad" and an engine. Station 3 had SQ3 & E3. The squads were changed to engines and SQ3 became E30. Now those E30/E40/E60 are E243/E244/E246.
