On I-64 Thursday morning as I merged on eastbound here in C'ville on my way to Richmond. A little brown Impala full of antennas was in the left lane. OK, unmarked maybe VSP. Then it got interesting as right on its bumper was a pickup truck with a Kayak in the bed, pulling a box type utility trailer. They were moving out 70+ I'd guess. Then, right on the tail of the trailer was another little brown Impala full of antennas. They all were staying in the left lane and I soon lost them ahead of me.

I got down close to Richmond and (I think it was) at the Oilville exit on-ramp, here comes the Impala with the truck/trailer and right behind it the other Impala merging on.

Any clues what that little caravan might have been?

I saw a similar Impala, obviously a 9C1, on I-64 about six weeks ago which stuck out like a sore thumb due to the several antennas on the trunk lid and roof. It was also an obvious unmarked VSP unit and, sure enough, about two miles up the road he pulled some guy over for something or other. This was between Waynesboro and C'ville. Doesn't VSP realize that those cheap little hub caps give then away as PD?

I don't think most of our unmarked cars are out there to try and get over on anyone. I know of plenty of VSP cars you wouldn't have a clue are VSP cars ;)

If it had the "cheap little" hubcaps, the small chrome hub covers, it wasn't a VSP car. Those little items are not approved equipment. ABC and DMV have no similar restriction for their units, but a Tpr would get in more than a little warm water for such equipment on his ride...

just sayin.

Thanks for the good info guys. It is something to watch for on the highway. The question I had was not what jurisdiction it was (not likely a county unit of any sort) but what could possibly be going on that required a close escort by two units of a pickup truck with a Kayak and utility trailer?

Thanks again.

Don't remember for sure on the trailer, but all vehicles had what appeared to be "normal" plates. Also, I didn't see any unusual antenna activity on the pickup. Oh well....

And sorry for the double post, my pc seemed to hang when I sent it so of course I clicked send a second time.

depending, on when,,

was it a holiday?
possibility of a couple LEOs escorting a search boat-crew..any bodies of water near their exit?
accident,missing persons,or even a crime scene at a lake,river may be a possibility..

or may just be gettin to the fishin hole on the quickitty quick after a tour..
