Is anyone using ScanControl? If so how do you like it? What are the pros and cons with this software? I plan on buying the Uniden BC898T but haven't decided on the software to go with it.

Although the radio-specific types of software tend to be better (e.g., the Butel product), ScanControl is good because you can set up a radio and then propogate the same set-up to other radios. Warning though, program for your oldest, simplest radio first, save the file, and then connect your newer radio like the 898. ScanControl will convert the data for use with the 898. If you do the 898 first is will likely NOT convert backward. Guess how I found out....yup.

While SC will not convert backward, you can easily do it anyway - if you have the full version, simply export your radio contents to a CSV file, and reimport to the other radio. Clunky but simple.

The logic is clear when you consider that channel capacity, ect. is very different for say a 296 than for a 245. In that case you need to edit the file to reduce from 1000 channels to 300, as well as ignoring PLs, ect. Same deal applies for, say going from an 898 to an 895 (in this case, the 895 doesn't support DCS...) 73s and happy holidays...Mike

True Mike, the logic is clear.
It was just one of those things that happen when you jump into new software of any kind and don't pick up all of the nuiances until you spend some time with it.
I've also found some inconsistencies with cutting and pasting.
For the most part there are buttons for this, but, I'm very used to
doing a Control-C (or Control-X) to copy or cut highlighted data and then
Control-V (ing) it to the new location, about 1/2 the time what actually pastes
is a bit of a mystery (so I try to retrain myself to slow down and use the buttons).
I didn't buy the full version, my understanding when I bought it was that the only diff was virtual control, but, as Ken mentions there are a few places on the site where there is a distinguishment. I could swear that there are also a number of places that state the only diff was virtual control or not (which was something I don't need so I didn't go with the full version). I'm not sure if I would have chosen differently in retrospect. Have you seen any other notable plusses other than enhanced import/export and virtual control that differentiate the 2 products?

You've pretty much touched on them; however, keep in mind that along with virtual control comes logging.
SC is not really set up to move data using the old fashioned Control-C tricks; actually it uses something much more powerful; the Enhanced Copy screen (which is available from the first screen under 'Move data/Export', if memory serves - it's on the desktop in the other room). With that you can move groups of frequencies and whole banks (even doing trunk vs. non trunk) very easily, once you set it up correctly. Save yourself a lot of frustration.

I'd also suggest reading my reviews on the 895 Wiki page in the software section. Between that, and downloading the manual (which has the prelim support for the 246/396 detailed there...) you should be able to save yourself some headaches. 73s Mike

There are lots of times where I just wanna move or copy something real quick and laying off the Windows shortcuts (Control-whatever) is too hard to resist.
