I was reading some posted threads between Viper & N7YUO about Scanlists, scanner set up and Object Oriented Scanning. Being newer to this hobby as well, my question is, is a Scanlist another way of indicating or saying how you have a Bank set up in your scanner? After much reading of the forum & some trial & error, I've garnered some hints. Two really good ones were the use of the attenuator & open/closed modes. I also want to listen to very specific traffic. My PSR300 is set up like this:
Bank 0: Sites 30, 11 & 31 in that order. TG's for Tooele Co. only, with the addition of Life Flight. Attenuator off & closed mode. I also found that if I had Nelson Peak listed first in Bank 0, it just "took over" for lack of a better description & I would miss some comms for the county. It was better when moved down a slot.
Bank 1: Site 11 only. TG's for SLCo VECC, Cottonwood & So. Salt Lake. Attenuator off & closed mode.
Bank 2: Site 11 only. TG's for W. Jordan, S. Jordan, WVC, Midvale, Taylorsville, Sandy & Draper. Attenuator off & closed mode.
This is the best setup to date, although still getting incomplete communications. I am open to any comments and or suggestions anyone might have regarding this set up. Also can someone tell me what the "Event" TG's are? I do not have them programmed in, thinking I would just hear police officers working the "Nine Inch Nose Hairs" concert at the E Center. Is there something more to those TG's?
Rolfman tried to send us a file containing his set up several months back but we could not open the file...(*%@#! Microsoft Vista). Also, does anyone think SL SIMUL ought to be programmed in? We live pretty much right under & up against the back of the Oquirrh Mts, quite a bit North & East of Tooele City proper. We can just see a light on top of an antenna on Farnsworth Peak and wonder if the mountains might shield us from reception?

A lot of questions, but always learning. Can't express enough how much all the help you folks have given us means.

yes a "scanlist" is very similar to a "bank" The main difference in the two is how they are programmed:

Bank: You program each bank, have to add the trunk system to each bank, and add each TG, or conventional you want to hear in that bank.

Scanlist: you program each trunk system, TG, and conventional freq forst. You then assign them to how ever many scanlists that you want.

Hey 2alpha56,

I would program in the event talk groups as you never know where activity is going to be happening. There was a thing just the other night where some surveillance type ops were on one of the event channels. Probably more interesting then Event channels are the VECC Ops Channels. They are where the gang unit run as well as several different Tactical ops.

That being said, I am one that has every Talk Group on UCAN programed so you can see where I am coming from.

In the configuration that you have you scanner setup a Scan List is equal to a Bank. Under my configuration, I can assign a single object to multiple scan list. Under a Bank type of configuration, frequencies and talk groups are specific to that bank. The concept of Scan Lists was born with Object Oriented configurations where I have the ability to store something once and use it in multiple locations.

In short, they are the same thing with some small differences.

I created this diagram some time ago to help explain how the Scan Lists work:

Utah Viper and bneilson thank you so much for the replies and the diagram. Most helpful! With this new info I can plainly see I do not have things set up in a Scanlist format. I have all of the VECC TG's programmed in a Bank. I will modify my set up to include the Event TG's.
I need to correct and apologize for an error in my original thread...it was WalkieTalkie who sent the file I couldn't open, not Rolfman. I want to thank the appropriate people, give credit where credit is due and not offend anyone.

Thanks again,
Jim

Conventional Scanlists

A lot of our counties are still conventional (Non-trunked)
Compare setting up scanlists for conventionals with scan banks:

Scanlists: Each conventional freq only needs to be programmed once*
The conventional freqs are 'mapped' to the desired Scan List.

Scan Banks: If you want Statewide - 155.505 in five different banks,
Then you have to program it in five different times, once for each bank.

It helps to have a list of conventionals, sorted by frequency, to help you avoid
unnecessary duplication when programming.

*If a frequency is used at multiple locations, each with a different squelch tone,
you will need to program that freq more than once if you want to use the tones.
Also, if you want to use different Alpha Tags for the different sites.

Here is a partial conventional chart: (Edit - I see that I mapped 155.535 twice)

Programming Advice:
If you copy the frequencies from RR Databases and paste them into MS Excel,
you will need to edit them before you can copy and paste them into WIN500.

Problem: When the freqs are pasted into Excel from RR DB, there is an extra space
after the last digit or zero. If that extra space isn't removed,
the frequency pasted into WIN500 becomes 'off-frequency'

154.055 Frequency with extra space and zero removed. default text with no extra zeros.
155.8950 Extra space and zero removed, column font reset to 'Number' with 4 decimal places.
453.85000* (note: the asterisk* did not show up until I posted the reply. It proves that there is an extra something there,
that if not removed, will screw up your programming if you try to paste that number directly into WIN500.
(I am not a Premium Subscriber, so I do not download directly from RR DB into WIN500)

The freq 453.85000 is what it looks like before editing. You can't see it unless you click on it,
but there is an extra space after the third zero. When I pasted this freq into WIN500,
at first it looks ok. When I move to another line in the program, the frequency changes to:
453.087500. The only way I have found to remedy this is to go down the list and remove the
extra space(s). Printer ink is expensive, and I don't need five decimal places, so I set the column to
four decimal places and all of the freqs line up nicely.
