Another question, hopefully simple. The cable that connects a scanner to the computer. Is it just a regular DB15 male/female cable or is there a special cable that I will need once I purchase the scanner?

Also, the ScanControl software. I'm assuming the full version compared to the lite version does more? What are the benefits of both?

It depends on the model scanner. Most Uniden hand helds come with a computer cable, most Radio Shack (PRO-95, PRO-96, PRO-2096) you have to purchase the cable seperately. Some scanners, like the Uniden BC780, BC785, and BC796 do use a standard DB9 male to female cable, but it's not included. Again it depends on what scanner you're talking about.

Don't know all the differences, I've always had the full version, believe it is in areas like data inport. There is a Yahoo group for ScanControl, run by the program's author. He is generally very prompt in answering questions, so join up and ask all you want!

The communication cable for that model is unique.

You can make one yourself if you can find the connector for the radio. The connector has five pins but only three are used. So it must be inserted properly - unless the cable is constructed to be inserted in either orientation.

There are also a few shops that make and sell them.

Googling for bc895xlt cable should get you pointed in the right direction.

There is a pin-out graphic in the files section on the BC895XLT yahoo group (Hardware sub-folder). You should join the group.

It just occured to me that you have switched models again. I thought you had decided on the BC898T model.

The BC895XLT will not be able to be upgraded on rebanding.

and again people *I* can't read. I wanted the 898T model. And I ALSO said I will not be monitoring the 800 frequency. I will be monitoring these:

46.060, 46.100, 46.160
460.600, 460.625
462.950, 467.950

Nothing about the rebanding I need to worry about.

Well does the Bearcat 898T not have the ability to be controlled via computer? Apparently it can since it is on the list of controllable scanners on ScanControl and it's like 1/2 the price. I think I'll go for that one.
