Hello,
On a recent vacation we noticed a few people having scanners to monitor the park rangers for moose & bear jams.

This has me thinking that I have an old Uniden "nascar" scanner Model BC95XLTB. For the scanner I have both the standard 5.5" whip antenna for it and also a magnet mount 15" antenna that just reads Larsen Special on it.

Will this work or do I need something newer / better? We probably only have 1-2 trips left out in the Tetons as my wife wants to visit other areas as well so I don't want to "try and see" and get out there to only find out what I have doesn't work.

My main focus is to monitor the rangers / brigade for the wildlife sightings.

Those that I saw just had a small handheld unit and didn't even use the external magnet antenna like I have. Again I'm open to upgrading scanners and also getting a bigger external magnet antenna if needed. I'm not sure if it matters but I run the scanner on 2 AA batteries.

Thanks for your time. Unsure where to put this post but I figured this was a good start as it's region specific. My apologies if it's in the wrong area.

Hi, Brian, and welcome to RR!

Looking here: Yellowstone National Park - The RadioReference Wiki it seems that both analog and digital formats may be used there, so your BC95XLT (analog only) may or may not be able to hear some of the communications. IE: North - 166.3250/166.9250 CTCSS 167.9 - NAC 167, where CTCSS denotes analog, and NAC denotes digital. Grand Teton seems to be all analog, as least as of when this RR Wiki entry was last edited: Grand Teton National Park (WY) - The RadioReference Wiki

I have NO experience in that area, so hopefully someone else that's local, or a more knowledgeable visitor can chime in with better suggestions.

Again, welcome to RR, and best of luck!
