Scanner with spectrum display?

Hello Group,

I was wondering if there is a scanner out that has a spectrum display/ waterfall that will "autotune" to the frequency at a set signal level? I am aware of the RTLSDR dongles and there is a program out thee that does this however, I would like to do this with a handheld unit.

I am also aware of the Quansheng uv-k5 with new firmware that does the above mentioned however its is "not great".

This autotune feature is great for Air band monitoring as it is very dynamic and catches very quick transmissions and it would be very good for a "close call" like frequency capture. Close call will skip over digital transmissions.

The only current scanners TMK that have spectrum analyzers are the 325p2, bct15x, 396/996xt & p2, HomePatrols (band scope) and the SDSx00s. The SDS scanners have a $20.00 waterfall paid upgrade. None of them will autotune to signals, however.

How about receivers Like the Icom R30? This feature would be nice on any radio.

Look up your receiver in question's documentation and it'll tell you. Page 21 of the R30 manual for example:


I have an R20 with band scope. It'll tune to signals it finds if you manually turn the dial in scope mode. I assume the R30 operates the same. But you'll get false positives, especially in a high RFI environment

Have used the band scope in the past. But it’s manual to turn to a frequency with activity. Haven’t used it in awhile so maybe I’ll test it out with squelch up to see if it locks on an active frequency.

There isa user created band scope pc program that uses the rear usb port on the 200 also. Free. It’s in one of the Facebook groups. Think it’s called free scanner software. Nothing fancy, just a scope.
