    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I would like to scan the businesses around me that use DLR/DTR radios, as I hate not being able to listen. Which radio in the series would be best to use to discover and scan? Any advice from someone who has done this before? TIA

I would recommend a scanner, as trying to discover using a consumer radio is a bit more tedious and they can be very balky to program.

I do most of my discovery stuff via SDR on a laptop, so there is also that route.

Not sure what your price point is, but the current gold standard is an SDS100...

For FHSS radios? Good luck with that.

You won't even detect the DTR/DLR radios with a scanner. They use FHSS in the 902-928 MHz ISM band.
If a business users is using them with the default group codes, you can use another DTR also set to the defaults and hear them.

And what is FHSS?
Frequency hopping spectrum.
Basically it has defined frequencies
1 = 900.000
2 = 901.000
...etc(NOT LEGIT FREQUENCIES JUST EXAMPLES)

and the radio/software will randomly pick out of the 100s of possible combos for a frequency and spend like 1 second of talk time on that 1 frequency before changing to another one. Scanners can't track that fast. Also not possible to figure out it's next frequency

DLR & DTR are model types of Motorola FHSS ( Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum ) radios. There are DLR1060 and DLR1020 radios which run at a lower cost than the DTR600 and DTR700 radios.

I have used the DLR1060 as well as the DTR700 models and they work very well, within reason, considering the frequency range they use.

Not my YT channel but it's a recording I made 10+ years ago.
This is what a DTR transmission sounds like if you can follow the FH:

I haven't played with these in a while. A few box stores near me use DLRs. Default profile.

Are there channels that can be set up to not be scanned or not able to be listened to? Such as a more private channel then FHSS already is

So default is like a "key code" and default I think is 0000. If you change that 0000 to something else, unless person plans to try all combos, they can't hear the conversation(s)

How many public channels does the dlr or dtr have? One day I may have to invest in one for how popular they are getting.
