Schuylkill County Scanner

I am contemplating buying a scanner (bcd536hp), i am curious if it is even worth it seeing all of Schuylkill county is encrypted? i listen to the 154.070, and the Schuylkill county fire feed on broadcastify, is there anything else i would be able to pick up county wide with a scanner that i do not already listen too? This would be used in my shack just to listen too as i am working on other things.

Hi & welcome to the RR forums. How about telling us what other than LE, Fire, EMS, etc you're interested in listening to? A few items right off the bat that can be listened to in most areas:
Amateur Radio
Aviation
Businesses
Citizen Band
FRS/GMRS/MURS
Railroads
Just about anything else listed on the Schuylkill County database page. Keep in mind you'll need DMR & NXDN paid upgrades to listen to anything identified in the database as such if it interests you.

EMS and fire from other countries might overlap your area.

The Turnpike near by has an analog repeater in the clear sinulcasting their digital system.

In addition to what the previous commenter mentioned, you might want to look at a scanner that does many trunking formats.

The trunking networks are typically shown on the bottom of the county's frequency webpage on RadioReference.

Certain trunked groups(analogous to conventional channels) might or might not be in the clear.

I listen to a lot of nets and such on ham radio, I have a yaesu ftm400 set up as a base on my desk. I recently got my technicians license back in august, so this is all fairly new to me. Growing up we always had a scanner set up in the living room and would listen to it, but now most/all is encrypted.



I missed a lot of the links you provided above, I programed my yaesu with almost all of my local repeaters, and can pick up quite a bit of amateur radio with that.



Id be interested in listening to some of the aviation, I have the life flight frequencies programmed, and listen to whichever ones I can pick up at the time, I also live pretty close to the joe zerbe airport, and almost always have the plane finder open. I also listen to the skywarn repeater a lot when there is weather going on.





As far as some ems overlapping, I do run into that, I pick up the local stuff on the 157.070, as well as some from the Lycoming, Williamsport areas.



I guess really, I would be interested in listening to just about anything. I was just concerned about spending a few hundred dollars on a scanner, and then ending up not getting anything more out of it then what I have already been listening to.
