Yes, I also would like to learn about where and what these “custom firmwares” are all about.

buddtousa; Why would you call any aftermarket firmware a hack? Isn’t the SDS series open source, where the term “Hacking” is somewhat harsh?
Can you provide a source saying that the SDS series radios firmware is open source? I seriously doubt that Uniden would use open source software for their scanners as that could put them in the position of having to provide the source code on request.

I wasn’t even aware there were aftermarket homebrew pieces of FW available. But it seems there are more warnings against trying any of it. So, as recommended, I will only use Uniden downloads.

FIRMWARE that changes how the scanner operates, and yes, it does work!
Haven't seen or heard of any firmware for SDS scanners other than UNIDEN. And to my knowledge UNIDEN does not provide information on their scanner that would allow anyone to develop firmware for them. Their firmware is not OPEN SOURCE code. And even if such firmware existed, I doubt anyone would chance BRICKING a $700+ scanner to try it, as Uniden would probably refuse to fix it after such tampering.

Sorry for the confusion, a bad assumption on my part.

Are you talking about the new firmware update that was released recently? There isn't any beta firmware/software

Actually there is, but it usually does not make it to the public domain. Occasionally it will if there is an issue that cannot be solved internally. But currently there is no public beta available.

@JoeBearcat
Look at post #13
So, you're making a big deal about me spoon feeding you a link so you could look it up yourself? Sure, I could have posted a direct link, but I wanted to show you that it is easily found with a simple search. Please remember that you are the one who asked for the source and info about it in post #10. Also, I stated in post #18 that it wasn't a good idea.

Maybe I make things too simple, but, if we interpret the original question being firmware, not software and if someone says there is non uniden firmware and if someone else asks what and where it is, then the answer that I would expect is what and where either in the forum or as a private message since as members of RR one of our unwritten duties is to provide as much good, accurate detailed information and answers where possible.
I think we are all familiar with search engines.
