We are attempting to restrict distribution channels to the specialty scanner channel for this new scanner as much as possible. Based on how many we have coming in and how big the demand is, there is little current incentive for dealers to utilize those channels. Not saying it won't happen (can't control that), but would be very surprised to see it happen very soon.

For those early adopters purchasing the SDS100 scanner right now for the current $649.99 going price, it would be a smart move on your part to purchase it using a credit card that offers free "Price Protection" or "Price Rewind" if you have such a card. With that protection the credit card company will send you the price difference between what you pay right now for the scanner and any lower price that you may find in the time period allowed by your card issuer (typically 60 or 90 days from your purchase date).

I have a Citi card that offers this feature for 60 days post original sale and a Discover card that offers this feature for 90 days post original sale. You usually can use this feature only ONCE during the time period allowed so use it to maximize the benefit to you. Check with your individual card issuer before making your purchase to see if you have this valuable FREE feature available to you. YMMV

$649 isn't collusion. Its a minimum advertised price resellers agree to as part of the terms and conditions for being allowed to sell the SDS-100.

Amazon destroys small specialty retailers such as those who sell and actually support scanners. Our intent is to support those specialty retailers.

If that's the case then why are all the other recent Uniden scanners sold by Amazon? 436, 536, etc...

May I ask why? That's bad news, at least for me, since I've been saving up my "points" to put towards buying one, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I wonder if it had anything to do with Amazon pulling all of the 536s claiming they didn't meet certifications they weren't required too. I don't remember the specifics, but it was right around the time I bought my scanner and I was hoping to use some accumulated Amazon gift cards.

I went with Ham Radio Outlet, standard (free UPS ground) delivery out of NH to MA was about 3 days from order to delivery, next day from shipping to delivery, and no sales tax. I wouldn't hesitate to go back there.

I was referring to Bearcat Warehouse as they were the extreme example.

But I did notice something on the Hamstation page... "Also we are charging your credit cards now as this help with no delays in shipping." I know this is a big no-no according to Visa, and may also be an issue with MasterCard and Amex.

From the Card Acceptance Guidelines for Visa Merchants: "Deliver the merchandise or services to the cardholder at the time of the transaction. Cardholders expect immediate delivery of goods and services unless other delivery arrangements have been made. For card-absent transactions, cardholders should be informed of delivery method and tentative delivery date. Transactions cannot be deposited until goods have been shipped or services received."

It's stuff like this that harms relationships between customers and small businesses. Don't blame big retailers like Amazon and the like just because they have their shhhhhh together and can follow the rules.

It seems this same or a very similar conversation happens every time a new scanner is released.

Also, typically shipping charges are actually "shipping and handling" fees. And the handling isn't referring to the physical carrying of the package by the carrier but rather processing and packing at the shipper. So...cost of them to ship it plus overhead.

Not trying to justify it or say it's right or wrong but just explaining how it sometimes is...

I reserved mine at HRO Anaheim 10 days ago. Have not been this excited about a new scanner this much since the 436HP/536HP. Price at HRO they quoted me was also $649. I already placed order, then Jeff from Ham Station contacted me. I thought they were long gone. Anyway, HRO only 5 miles from me, so just waiting for the call to pick up.

I reserved mine 22 days ago and have not received anything from HRO. ;(

The "other delivery arrangements" are clearly specified on the hamstation page, as is a tentative delivery date. If you don't like what they are offering, you are free to go elsewhere, or not purchase at all.

That's not the part to take notice of - that pertains to face-to-face transactions. It's the next two sentences that are pertinent, with the last being most important: "Transactions cannot be deposited until goods have been shipped or services received." Meaning you cannot charge the customer's Visa until the item ships.

Many of us have been doing business with HamStation for many years and have no problems with the way they do business. They have a top notch reputation here for years. Sounds to me your like your upset because no retailer meets the requirements your looking for in order to get a initial release. It’s kind of hard to do when the SDS100 hasn’t reached distributer yet. Your probably better off waiting until one is in-stock so your card is properly charged and you get the best deal your looking for. Initial release and Pre-orders have been done this way for years and no one has ever been hosed.

A first of its kind brand new niche product selling for a 30% premium to its predecessor doesn't seem that unusual to me. The SDS-100 has features that aren't available anywhere else, and likely won't be for quite some time, perhaps for years. If you want to be the first kid on the block to own the cool new toy, you're gonna have to pay up whether it's an iPhone or SDS-100.
