Ah, now its falling into place. The Priority settings mentioned before, the ones set in the Profile, are only applicable to conventional systems. But since the system you mention is a trunked system, it is a different ballgame.

Turn off the Priority things in the profile. You get the error because the scanner is looking for a conventional frequency set as priority. Because you have a trunked system, there are no conventional channels involved. (Like trying to watch a television show on an AM radio).

Restating what was said above, edit your Favorites List, go to the system and look in the options tab. Turn on Priority ID Scan. Then set one or more talkgroups so that P-Ch is On.

Trunked priority and conventional priority are two different things. Priority on Uniden scanners is confusing so don't beat yourself up. Also, with Priority ID Scan, there is no preemption, so don't expect a conversation to "stop" while the scanner checks for traffic on a priority channel.

You got it! I believe this is the source for much confusion and frustration, and many claims of "Priority doesn't work" are more of a programming issue then a scanner default. Improvements could be made if possible...mainly allowing preemptive priority on trunking systems, or some sort of a "Global Priority" option which would the scanner to jump right to the trunking talkgroup or conventional priority channel of choice.

And preemptive P25 priority is on the list of issues I have requested to be addressed.

I do not know why the current scheme was selected (having the profile setting apply only to conventional channels). It probably has something to do with wanting to be able to control trunked systems independently.

I'm sure there is a software engineering reason why, but I find the following interesting:

If conventional priority is "operating" and the scanner is holding on a trunked system talkgroup, the scanner will preempt to check for a priority conventional transmission. But the opposite is not true - if the scanner is holding on a conventional frequency/channel, it will not preempt to check a trunked system.

All that said, back when our community migrated to an 800 digital trunked system, some things relating to trunked priority scan were learned by our radio shop folks. So programming trunked systems for priority scanning must be fairly elaborate.

It's a technical reason to that. Checking a conventional channel are done by looking at the carrier detect, that takes something like 20mS for each channel. Checking a trunked system needs the scanner to decode the control channel, that could take at least 1 second for each site, which would be an unacceptable long time. Only solution would be a dual receiver system, or another scanner or radio monitoring only that priority trunked system.

This would be amazing if you can get it done!

What would be even better would be a preemptive priority WITH talkgroup ranking. In the same way you can assign a channel an audio offset, have a priority offset. There is a lot of stuff I don't scan because I don't want it keeping me from missing actual radio traffic I need to hear.

“There is a lot of stuff I don't scan because I don't want it keeping me from missing actual radio traffic I need to hear.”

Missing traffic has been the trade-off scanners have had to contend with ever since (in my case) Regency started mesmerizing people with rolling flashing little red lights. I’ve never liked assigning priority channels because they caused that intermittent drop in signal while the scanner checked if the priority channel had become active. And DND, although it looses the aggravating intermittent drop in signal, is only slightly better… at least I am not bothered by that drop-out while the scanner is checking. But there is still the chance a few misses will be realized. And now, since the SDS’s handle the priority features differently for conventional and trunked, it’s even more probable even conventional priority channels will be missed when the scanner is in trunking mode or vice versa.

The solution to not missing “a lot of stuff” is to dedicate a receiver to each particular channel/agency/TG you consider you “need to hear”, period. (Sorry if you don’t have enough receivers hanging around to dedicate. In that case there is no solution to not missing, at least to the best of my knowledge. This solution hasn’t changed since the scanner was first introduced. I know, its a direct contradiction to what a scanner’s intended purpose is supposed to be, but until they can get a scanner to record/playback what it’s missing when it’s listening to other stuff, it is what it is.

Over the years I have accumulated enough scanners to dedicate to those channels/agencies/TG’s that I would like to prioritize. And without realizing it my shack now has the ability to monitor 4 or 5 different entities in real time. But I never seem to use it. I believe that’s because my intent was to listen to mutual aid calls involving numerous FD’s, the medical helos and the PD, for example, a working fire, which was great when I first set up the extra radios. But now there are interoperability, mutual aid, and regional frequencies that most all agencies possess and are using to a greater degree. So maybe priority settings will no longer be needed and become a thing of the past… not anytime soon but who knows?

That one place...
You have to enable the List, for it to scan. (List to monitor = ON)

So it can find the Priority channel

I used to have a "s*&t" scanner to just put all those "other" rando channels into.

I think it would be nice if they didn't have to scan - that they could just monitor all the channels at once so you wouldn't miss anything. But, it's probably gonna be decades before the technology gets that advanced (if ever.)

The burned out assignment editors at my station listening to 10 scanners at once would love to comment on the mental health aspects of such a concept! o_O

Number of talkgroups/channels that are so important that you can't bear to miss a transmission = Number of scanners you gotta have.
Even doing something like that... If several of them would pop off at the same time you would be so overwhelmed to be able to process all that info just by listening to it... Would be very confusing...

Well that's why you turn the priority radio(s) up and the scanner lower.

If several of those priority radios would pop off at the same time, tell me you can follow all the conversations at the same time...
I don't think so... That would be pretty tough to do... If it's only a couple, 2 or 3 sure...

Back in the 70's, when I was doing over the air traffic reports during rush hour, we had a lady that listened to 10 scanners (6 channel each) and let us know where any accidents were. She was fantastic, never missed a beat. She'd been doing it for years and was the best. And yes, a very difficult job.

Yes indeed, That has to be tough to follow all that... I'm sure there are some people that can do it... But that would drive me insane... :ROFLMAO:

🤷‍♂️ I don't know. My preference is to only use one radio at a time.
