Simpler than that. Buy Uniden's GPS kit,
Plug the GPS and set location control on,
set range to 10 miles,
Turn on nationwide scanning, turn favorites off,
Select the service types you are interested in,
drive away.
Hi, I bought the Uniden GPS for the SDS200 I plugged it in set the baud rate to 9600. Serial port The auto locate says unable to locate and when I put in my GPS coordinates it says out of range. This is the biggest piece of garbage I've ever owned in my life and before. I throw it out the window at 90 miles an hour. Can somebody please help me get this GPS working? Thank you. I also tried it at 4800 bod. The g p s icon stays steady and white

Make sure the sds200 is set to scan the full database
Menu -> Set Scan Selection -> Select Lists to Monitor -> Full Database -> ON
A method to quickly check that the GPS is working is to turn on the full database and set your zip code to a distant place (I use 90210...Beverly Hills). Wait for the California stuff to load, then plug in the GPS. Within a few seconds you should see the database load your local area.

The GPS icon shows on the display when the gps is connected, it doesn't necessarily mean the GPS has satellite lock. If you set a field on the display for Latitude or Longitude it will display said coordinates when a GPS lock is obtained.

And, when you find out it is operator error, what then?

I'd recommend editing your display so that a couple of fields show lat/long. It'll be blank if no GPS lock and will show cordinates when it has lock. That way, you can visually see what is going on.

Customize Display

Auto locate has nothing to do with GPS it looks for KNOWN TRUNKING SYSTEMS WITH KNOWN NACS to determine its location.
It uses the DATABASE FOR REFERENCE.
So everybody thanks for your input. I finally had a friend who was a communications guy for a department of public safety building. Help me figure out that having a GPS antenna. You still need a regular antenna to get reception and hear the traffic. I conflated the 2.. I'm like my x m antenna doesn't need a separate antenna

bought the Uniden GPS for the SDS200

I plugged it in set the baud rate to 9600.

The auto locate says unable to locate and when I put in my GPS coordinates it says out of range.

All you need to do is plug in the gps and enable the full database. Set baud rate and set a range. Generally 10 or less will work fine. I run usually 0.5. You should see gps show on the screen.

As mentioned you do not enter your coordinates or mess with auto-locate.

I finally had a friend who was a communications guy for a department of public safety building. Help me figure out that having a GPS antenna. You still need a regular antenna to get reception and hear the traffic. I conflated the 2.. I'm like my x m antenna doesn't need a separate antenna

The gps has its own antenna inside but may not work that well if inside a home. So depending on your homes construction, you may need to try outdoors.
