I recently purchased an SDS100 , I have had to charge the battery 3 times . The first time for about 8 hours , the second time for about 6 hours and so far today it has been charging a little over 6 hours . The red light has not turned green any of these times . How long should it take for the battery to fully charge ?

At first, when the radio is new, it's not unusual to go over 12 hours or more before the light turns green.

If you are using the radio while charging it could take much longer and you might have periods where the light will go off altogether and the radio will stop charging as a safety measure that things are getting too hot.

If you're charging the radio after its shown low battery indicator give it 12 hours or more, if the light still hasn't turned green, unplug the wall wart from the wall and replug it in and see if the light turns green in about 5 minutes. See how that works.

If it doesn't turn green let it charge for another few hours, if it's still doesn't turn green unplug the wall wort and replug it in the wall and see if it doesn't turn green in about 5 minutes.

I have never gotten a green light unless it charges say overnight with the scanner turned off. Then I’m good to go on battery for 7 or 8 hours.

Sounds pretty normal to me. The battery does not have a memory but people have said that the first dozen times or so you charge it it takes a long time, I remember when the big butt battery came out it took about 15 hours to get the green light the first half a dozen times I charged it but everything seems to be normal.

If you feel underneath the antenna mount you will notice that it is excessively warm, this is normal, if you are listening at the same time you are charging and it gets too hot it will stop charging and the light will go off all together, you can either stop listening and just charge or turn the radio off and let it cool off and then the red light will come back on.

Sounds like you're in good shape.

The scanner can only charge at a 500mA rate as max. The small battery are 3600mAH and the big 5400mAH. 3600/500=7,1 hours charge time and 5400/500=10,8 hours.

Make sure the power source you're using has enough capacity to fuel the situation. For example, you need at least 500ma with the scanner powered off. Use a short and/or high quality (beefy) USB cable. If you are powering the radio during charging, I'd also suggest you add USB voltage and Battery voltage to your display; then you can get a better idea of what's happening in real time.

You may want to get the external charger and a second battery. Been using the external charger for years with no battery problems.
