Try experimenting with different filters:
Using Filters
  • MENU
  • MANAGE FAVORITES LIST
    • Select Favorites List
  • REVIEW/EDIT SYSTEM
    • Select System
  • EDIT DEPARTMENT
    • Select Department
  • SET FILTER (Play around with the different filters here. Personally I found "Invert" works best for more distant signals, 1 to 2 bars). May or may not improve anything

Also try setting your squelch to 2

Filters will help a lot with decoding issues. But with 4 filters, 5 if you count off, you need to experiment with it.
Also as others have noted conventional P25 channel is Phase 1 12.5khz not phase 2 6.25khz channel spacing, Phase 2 only happens on P25 trunking systems.
Also stock antenna is just not great in general. Since you know you need VHF antenna find a good VHF or Dual band hammy antenna that is 2meter and 70cm. I have one of those on my SDS100 and it does well on VHF and UHF. I also prefer that antenna on 700/800mhz trunking. But with anything RF related its all dependent on location. What works for me may not work for you. But the fun part is testing. Dont forget you can also use local noaa weather radio to test your VHF antenna coverage. Find an antenna that works well with that then test your P25 channel.
