I have an SDS100 with GPS setup and confirmed to be working. However, I recently reprogrammed my scanner and I'm suddently scanning way too many frequencies, even some from a state almost 100 miles away. Chatter has been reduced due to (I imagine) the large amount of sources to scan.

I'm wondering if it's due to the simulcast systems? I'm not quite sure how to force the scanner to keep the simulcast frequencies in the gps location of that specific city ONLY when in that city. I've set my range to 1, zero, 15. Nothing changes

The first thing I would do is check the Range settings. Try setting it to 0 (zero) miles at first and slowly increase it a half mile or so at a time until you are comfortable with the results.

Yeah, I currently have it set the range to zero. Is there a way to force the frequency to a specific zip code using sentinel?

Yeah, I missed that part...

Setting it to Zero effectively sets it to your ZIP Code.

Are you using Favorites Lists or the Full Database? I have to assume that you are using the database. The best thing to do would really be to create Favorites Lists, this way you can control exactly what you want to listen to.

Do you have "Use Location" set to YES under the Options tab in your favorite(s)? If that is set to NO then the scanner will ignore all GPS data.

EDIT: I am assuming that you are using a favorite. If you are using the master database, that option is not available.

Occasionally I find some individual sites (in e.g. large trunked systems) have incorrect (or undesirable, even if they're technically correct) location settings. For example, a site that provides partial coverage to a single county has location setting specifying a radius of 120 miles. The result is that you'll scan that site and any talkgroups that might be carried by that site if you're within 120 miles of the site.

This was it! I didn't realize that a new addition to the favorites list wouldn't be automatically enabled to location control. Thanks!
When scanning Favorite Lists, the range settings only work with Favorites Lists that have Location Control set to On. The default setting for Location Control is Off.

Location Control is enabled when scanning the Full Database.

When using range, the best you can do is start at 1, then increase as needed. I have mine set at 7 miles and still get stuff 50 miles away. Its the way P25 works as all towers associated with the transmission send the transmission. If one is closer to you, you will pick it up. Just fine tune as you go.

Are you possibly scanning the full database as well as one or more Favorites Lists? That would a reason why you are receiving frequencies from a state 100 miles away.

Location control entails an area associated with an agency's jurisdiction. So if you are scanning a statewide frequency, such as state police, it will have a large range.

If you've built Favorites Lists, then you can turn off the full database.

Good point. However, it sounded like he had the Use Location setting set to NO which is why it was ignoring the GPS settings.
