You don't have to pull the SD card out to do a firmware update.
Other than replacing a faulty card, I can't think of a reason to take it out.
Of course, this doesn't help now. Keep in mind for the future.

I'm guessing I can hook the included cable to my computer and run sentinel software to do that?
Yes, when you attach the USB cable, the SDS100 will prompt you to press E/yes or ./NO. You press E/Yes button to select Mass Storage Mode.
After a short period, a new drive letter should appear in My Computer or This PC. That's the SD card in your SDS100 and you can use Sentinel to update the firmware directly to the card in the radio. Mass Storage Mode basically turns the SDS100 into a card reader.
The 436 isn't much more friendly on that, either. I won't remove a portable's SD card unless it goes bad for that reason.

Whatever you do, don’t force it. There is absolutely no excessive pushing or pressing required to replace the SD card. Look closely at the carriage the card goes into. You can determine which way the card must be oriented in order to get it mounted, and how it’s slides into it’s locked position. The Utube will help.

Acquiring Uniden Sentinel & the firmware update procedure are explained in great depth in this Youtube video. There should be no reason to remove the SD card if you don't suspect it is faulty, the assembly is very delicate. Additionally I'd strongly recommend perusing through the easier to read SDS100 manual to familiarize yourself with the SDS100 and its basic operations. Welcome aboard!

Yes, or any other mini USB cable. The one that came with the scanner is not special.

Yes, it is a standard USB configuration, BUT is also uses AWG24 for the power wires inside of it. Necessary because the 100 is a power hog and if you use a smaller gauged cable, you will get the dreaded low voltage errors...
