The number 9 after the Z indicates it was made in 2019, #2698 made in the indicated year.

The other number is the MAC address of the network port.

Just got my sds200 Friday. No hum. When the room is totally silent at night, I can hear a slight pulsing noise as it scans. Reminds me of the sound the big spinning wheel makes on The Price is Right. This is normal, right? I hear NO noise or hum during a transmission. It's a great radio. Sounds really good to me.

So this is Dec 15, and my serial # is 384Z98002698, with a barcode below with # 00E01112128BD. I'm guessing this is a very high serial number. Has anyone determined the a sertain range of serial numbers indicate a factory fix? I bought it from webtron-x who said they sell 80 per month so I expect this is a recent build. Any decoding of these numbers available to indicate a build date? Thanks,

Geno
The noise you are describing is the "hum" / hash that some people report as data is written to the display. When audio is being played through the radio's internal speaker, the noise disappears into the background because less data is being written to the screen, and the voice / audio level overwhelms it (audio Signal to Noise ratio is high.) You have to decide for yourself if the noise when squelched is objectionable in a quiet room. My SDS has this type of noise, but since the ambient noise in my listening environment is comparatively loud, the noise is inaudible.

Yeah, makes sense. Other than at night, I'd never notice it. Actually, it does it when my display is off. Should I not hear it if it's not writing to the display? Also, not a hint of noise through earbuds.

When I get a minute, I'll open the case and see if they stuck the penny in at the factory. Thanks.

The display processing system is probably still writing data even when the physical display is turned off. The noise being generated is leaking into the speaker level audio amp section. If the radio is streaming via a network connection, or you listen via the headphone jack, there is no noise - at least in my and other's experience.

I concur. I just operated. The penny is indeed there. That black sticky strip was not. Glad I looked. The assembler must've been in a hurry putting the silver top on, because the copper foil was wadded up a little. I smoothed it out with my finger and slooowly replaced the top. Another observation, the main (black) cover fit very snug. Not easy to slide off or back on. Wonder if that was part of the fix. In upman's original fix video, it seemed to slide off quite easily.

Nevertheless, I love this scanner. Others may have a louder hum/noise, because no way would I send this jewel back because of this barely audible sound. Cheers all,

Geno

Setting the audio off time to 500ms or 1 second will stop the sound while the unit is scanning.

Not for me. But let me say again, it's a very slight noise. Maybe I have the hearing of Steve Austin. If you know the reference, you are old. I've listened to examples. Mine is nothing like a hum. More like data being written to a card. I can live with it. Love my 200.

I got my 200 in Nov and it had some hum, so I ordered the part that is suppose to fix it. It came and I took the 200 apart to fix it and it had the part installed. So I just added the part I received on top of the existing part. It seems to have fixed it so far. Maybe people with hum needs to add 2 parts instead of one!

Very happy. Haven't played with filters. Mostly just setting up favorite lists and changing delay settings. I like a lot of lists so I can select different combinations of counties and service types to monitor.

Just to clarify, there where more than 1900 made with a 2018 timestamp. So probably 2000 where made in 2018 and perhaps 1000 in 2019. But yes, a total of 3000 SDS200 scanners have been manufactured.

No. The serial number indicates the actual year of manufacture, per UPMan. Serial numbers restart each year, they do not continue sequentially from the previous year. So the 3000 or more SDS200s made in 2019 are in addition to what were made in 2018, and don't count international variants like the Euro and the Australian models.

The numbers are on a sticker on the back of the scanner. And the Product Manager for the scanner division is probably privy to the sales numbers in his division...

Since there is a lot of guessing going on about serial numbers equaling units made, what was the starting serial number (e.g. 1, 100, 1000?)

It's not a "guess" when the Uniden Product Manager for the scanner division posted an explanation of Uniden's serial numbering practices, and it's verifiable.

For example, looking through my scanner modding database, I see serial numbers ranging from 102 to 9430 for BCD436HPs made in 2014 (I modded serial numbers 376Z48000102 and 376Z48009430). So the sequence probably starts at one, but cannot be any higher than 100, given the data I have. My SDS200 serial number is 384Z98000217, or unit 217 made in 2019.

It would’ve been nice if they’d done something a little more specific like a VIN. Follow the single digit year with a letter A through L for Jan through Dec, then the day, then the unit number for that day. Less revealed about production quantities but more specific and helpful info for buyers. Something more like 384Z9B14017 meaning an SDS200 made on Valentine’s Day 2019, unit 17 produced that day.

Or shoot, keep the sequential numbering going all year if you like, just add the month and day. Like 384Z9B1400217.

Heaven forbid, I must have missed that post by Paul. Can you point me to where it is buried? Thanks. I certainly did not mean to imply that you were guessing, Jon (although you did say "probably" in your second paragraph ;).) I was talking about the thread in general where the words "guessing" and "probably" were used by others when discussing the serial number. Oy vey, what's the use? Thanks for the info.
