“The last four digits of the S/N only indicate how far down in the sequence you are for that production year.” That is not necessarily (at all) the same as the number of total manufactured units that year.

It indicates a minimum number though. If you see a serial 9000, you know at least 9000 were made. Maybe more, but not less.

I understand what you mean and how you arrived at that conclusion. What I’m saying is that production sequences don’t necessarily start at 0. The first one could be labeled 1000. Or any random number. Additionally, production sequences don’t need to necessarily be in strict numeric order, and they don’t need to necessarily be cohesive off each finishing station of an assembly line at each location where they are assembled. They probably are, granted, but still :)

I've got serial numbers as low as 102 and higher than 9000, so if Uniden is playing games with the serial numbers, they aren't starting with a sequence number higher than 100.

Without proof it's meaningless, but I seem to remember Paul posting something like that. Being that if you have S\N 8572 it doesn't necessarily mean 8571 other units exist.

Maybe someone with no life can search all of his posts and prove or disprove my recollection.

Well, I don't have much of a life any more but I sure don't feel like all that searching!

FWIW, I've got a 396 on my workbench right now with serial number ending 0012.

In order to fix the hum, you have to know where the noise is actually coming from, then shield that area from getting into the RF section.
My first step would be to have a SDS200 where you hear the noise with the covers off. Then use a spectrum analyzer RF probe kit. The one I have costs $100, but has 4 different RF probes for different applications. Hook the spectrum analyzer probe to an AF amplifier using the phono inputs (use a stereo to mono adapter) and start slowly moving the probe around until you hear the hum. Using the speaker outputs, have one hooked to a speaker and the other to an oscilloscope. Watch and listen while probing around till you hear the hum. Using the phono input of an amplifier is way more sensitive vs. the line level inputs. Phono input is the key to be able to hear the hum
I suspect it’s going to be one or two wires from the circuit board to the display. Should this be the case, I’d wrap the offending wires with copper foil and solder the end to a close ground trace.
Unidens fix seems more like a “bandaid” then an actual fix. Time to rip off the bandaid and fix it once and for all.

Let start off with this all these years working around loud printing presses and still do at this day my hearing is going times (I get ringing in the ears or don't hear nothing all day in one ear) I hear good times or I have people repeat themselfs. When I got the sds200 didn't had no hum til like a week after I had it. Than I was like what is that noise and it popping and so on. I had to turn off the unit cause the hum was too loud and couldn't hear the audio good. Than I got hold of uniden and I sent my unit in and a month later got a new unit. I had the new unit for a few a days and the hum came back. A month later I was thinking of selling it cause it drove me nuts cause the unit is like 2 feet from my bed. Than I decide to hold off selling it and notice a member on here @StaticDischarge I decide to ask him in private message what to do or figure something else out. I decide to send it to him and got the unit less than 2 weeks from shipping and coming back and so far the past few months no hum........ :)
