Somewhere monitoring the air.
seth21w, I put a few layers of copper tape on the exposed part of the NMP200 piece when it's installed to improve contact between it and metal lid. It reduced the hum quite a bit more and I loved it enough to purchase a second SDS200. My second unit arrived with the NMP200 piece already installed but hum was still louder than my first was post-fix. I did the same on that unit and they're both at the same, quite acceptable, level.

It mitigates the "hum" to where it shouldn't be a bother in all but the quietest of rooms.

Of course, I imagine such a "hack" comes at your own risk. Don't lose any shavings.

More importantly, though, I would not install two NMP200 pieces. I don't think a second one would fit properly (there are plastic clips and such in the unit if you look closely; they could snap off). I would also worry about it shorting something out or damaging the LCD if attempted.

All posts are just my opinion! ;)
Ok I won't add another nmp200 I will just find some copper tape to thicken it up so that it stays in contact. I believe the nmp200 part just isn't thick enough to stay put after a while.

You know Jen it looks like you could benefit from the 3M double-sided tape treatment. Right where you're four fingers are take off the outer cover and apply double-sided tape with the sticky side down leaving the topside non sticky, reapplying the outer case pushing down on that area. Maybe there's some Bowing in your outer case.

If you have time, can you try the following? Remove and format the SD card, re-insert, clear user data and see if it's any less.

I've seen differences with different cards, and after formatting a card. Since yours was previously quiet I'd like to see if it makes any difference.

Thanks

SD card formater from Tuxera is recomeded by Uniden

I’ve ran into the same issue. I installed the part and my hum went away. However, when I changed to a high endurance 32 gb SDs card, the hum returned.

When I get some free time, I’ll reformat the card and see what happens.

Mine was stone dead quiet till last night when I noticed an annoying noise, had the tv down, the radio down and realized what it was.... I could make it almost go totally away by squeezing the case behind the plastic trim as shown in the attached picture which leads me to believe it's mechanical (so I'll hold off on the SD card format for now, but will do if needed). I didn't listen further to hear if it was mechanical hum or in the actual audio chain and coming out the speaker, if squeezing it DOES cause a reduction in the noise in the audio chain then sounds like a ground issue that the case squeeze is helping. The noise is the same with the display on or off, slight buzzing with various sparky sounding crackles, I almost thought it was lamp driver noise, the lamp timer is set to Infinate but the noise stays the same if it is swithed to 1 second... I just shut it off and went to bed, we're not on speaking terms at present, I'll listen again later and see if it gets worse..

Take the case off and loosen the top cover piece screws then hold pressure on the cover and tighten the screws down.

Are the new SDS200s being shipped with this piece installed? If so, how can I tell if it has it installed or not without opening the case up if possible?

As posted here several times all SDS200's delivered to the United States after the 1st batch has the part installed.
Thanks! I actually still get some buzzing, when the display changes, through the speaker. I popped it open, it did have the part installed. It's not bad at all only audible if you're in a absolute silent room.
I also discovered the filter settings, one other major differences with SDS100 and SDS200 I found out. 20db change in signal difference!

Search YouTube for hum videos

That could yield some unwanted results! o_O

Ok I found this.

Is this what everyone is calling a "humming" sound"? It sounds more like an oscillating sound. Man just watching that demo, started to make my head hurt!!! I was expecting something along the lines of a 60Hz hum, which would have been bad enough. But this noise is really irritating! I don't understand why squeezing the metal case or tightening screws would help matters. It sounds as if some circuit boards are not making good contact or possibly have a crack in a trace or cold solder joint.

Yeah, I don't consider it a hum. More like a processor type noise. Mine sounds exactly as in that video. I have the "ghetto" fix installed.

And still after being told time after time. The current SDS 200s are the same design as the 1st shipment with the mediation part installed. There was no redesign of the scanner.
