The Department of National Defence, the Canadian Coast Guard and its volunteer branch will join forces with the Niagara Unit of the Civil Air Search & Rescue Association this weekend for major maritime search and rescue exercises on both Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
Saturday’s exercise will take place on the very west end of Lake Ontario in the waters between Oakville to Grimsby and west to the Burlington piers. The exercise will concentrate on honing the skills required to respond to emergencies at sea and practising hoisting people from marine vessels via helicopter.
The exercise will involve a 14.6-metre Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Lifeboat based out of Port Weller, and Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary vessels out of Oakville, Hamilton and Grimsby. Naval Reservists from HMS York will also be in attendance.
The Civil Air Search & Rescue Association CARES - Niagara Unit #11 will participate with two planes and the Royal Canadian Air Force 424 (T&R) Squadron out of Trenton will be sending their CC130 Hercules and CH146 Griffon Helicopter in the afternoon.
These marine and air units will be running search patterns individually and in coordination with each other throughout the day.
On Sunday, the action moves to Lake Erie.
It will take place on the waterways from Point Abino to Port Dover.
The on-water portion of the training will involve the Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Lifeboat Thunder Cape based out of Port Dover and a Coast Guard Inshore Rescue Boat team based out of Long Point. Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessels from Fort Erie, Port Colborne and Port Dover will participate in this exercise.
