Secret Service in 1988
In 1988 I bought via mail order a guide to federal government frequencies. I worked in a Radio Shack store in the mall in Joplin, Missouri, and I entered a bunch of frequencies in a display scanner just for the fun of it. Lo and behold, a few days later pres. candidate Michael Dukakis showed up in Missouri looking for votes, and made a visit to the mall there in Joplin. Suddenly the bank of frequencies in that display scanner came alive - "The candidate is moving west toward the food court." "The candidate is approaching Sears.", etc. It made for some interesting monitoring! Of course now it's all encrypted. I miss the 80's - those were the best days for scanner monitoring, in my opinion.
