Selfridge Air Base running exercises today! It makes for some interesting listening, and gives you a chance to find new frequencies, and verify existing ones.

It's a UTA weekend for the 127th and next weekend is a UTA for the 927th.

Let us know if you get some new freqs :)

I saw a blackhawk headed south a couple of minutes ago- very rare sight in my part of town, but i also saw one headed the same direction some time last week. probably not related to the UTA but who knows

Has anyone found freqs for the C130s that are valid? I know I've beat this one to death but I'm having no luck. The freqs I have in the wiki were given to me but are always quiet. By the way, the Chinooks were flying around up here last night and this morning. They must be keeping busy too.

kc8bdk (Paul) has a brother that works at Selfridge as a dispatcher. Also, another member, Piston52Heavy either works there, or knows people who do (I think). If it's not classified, maybe that could provide some info?

It seems like I use to hear them alot just on the Tower but now its very rare. But my scanner only covers 108-174 and 380-512 so i miss out on alot (most) of the possible freqs. :-(

Sorry, but I do not work at Selfridge and/or know anyone that works there.

I did see and hear some fighters depart Selfrisge last night (Sat. June 3) around 10:30 P.M. Can someone explain what UTA means?

UTA stands for Unit Training Assembly or drill days. There are actually 2 four hour periods per day or 4 per weekend.

UTA = Unit Training Assembly... which is the one weekend per month training exercises for NG/Reserve units. Its where you get the cliche, "one weekend a month, 2 weeks a year" from recruiters.

BTW my brother also spotted those F-16s last night while up near 25 + romeo plank

I will check with my Bro tonight. He is more into the Security area... and rarely deals with aircraft... unless one declares an "in flight emergency".

heck, I gave him the Freq and PL of their Security Forces radios for his scanner.

but I will try

BTW, my Bro... and all members of the 127SFS rotate positions. One day he might be dispatch, the next working the search pit, the next working a secure area. It does make for a nice break... not working the same position every day

I just heard (on my scanner) and saw an American Trans Air 757 land at Selfridge on runway 19.

Is there any areas around there were you can park legally and still be able to see anything?

Selfridge really isnt a very spotter-friendly base so your choices are pretty much limited to...

the Wal-Mart parking lot at Hall + I-94 (they even have a gazebo-type thing by the pond that makes for a good spot) Here's the view from there: http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/2577/p10100105ko.jpg

The other choice would be the small open area where North River Road, Old North River Road, and Bridgeway St. meet. There is a small gravel spot where people normally park and fish. Here's the view form there: http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/599/p10100220cu.jpg

Neither places get you very close but that may be a good thing if you dont want security bothering you.

And that ATA 757 was actually the 3rd in the past 2 days. Wednesdays always seem busy for chartered aircraft for some reason: http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KMTC And of course with my luck i managed to miss all of them. Did hear some F-16s and saw a KC-135 gettin ready to go while i was leaving though.

Thanks guys! I was getting ready to scout out a spot, and hang out with my scanner for a few hours. But it was right around the time they had that shooting, so I thought I better let things cool down for awhile. I have a digital camera with a 12X optical zoom, and IS (Image Stabilization), so maybe I'll be able to catch a few good pics!

I don't want to get close enough to draw attention to myself, and end up being interrogated by Jack Bauer! ;)

I dont know if you've been to the Air Museum on base or not but that is actually probably the best spot. No view of the field but it's much closer to the aprch end of RWY19. Only open on weekends though.
