Selfridge ANGB Michigan Air Show 2009 pictures

Hello all,

I finally got around to uploading and annotating my pictures from the previous month's Selfridge ANGB Michican Air Show:

Picasa Web Albums - Jeffrey - Selfridge ANG...

There is an interesting collection of DHS assets included, and some neat pop up-communication tower shots, along with all the static aircraft and pictures from some of the flying acts.

Thought I'd revive this topic for the upcoming Aug 20-21 2011 show.

At the beginning if the year, the T-birds were scheduled to perform, but they cancelled months ago.
Then, the F-22 was supposed to be there, but its not on the attractions page.

I heard the Raptor was grounded, so maybe thats why. Anyways, the show has gone down hill was before it started, but still looks to be well worth the while to go.
I'll be at my old spot, detailed earlier in this thread.

Confirmed, the entire Raptor fleet is grounded due to oxygen contamination problems, and will not perform at Selfridge, or anywhere else, for the forseeable future.

Here's a link to an article that has a link to a VERY interesting article about the entire F-22 situation:

The entire U.S. stealth fighter fleet is grounded

Xray, are you planning to be there Sunday, and are you watching from outside the base? I think that I'm going to be on Continental or somewhere very close to it on Sunday.

I saw the Raptor last year at Battle Creek, very impressive aircraft that does things no other jet can possibly do - But its turning into quite the hangar queen, and is a stunning maintenance hog. Almost 50 hours of maintenance for every hour in the air, and a swarm of 3,000 looking after a fleet of about 125.

I'll be at the end of Sugarbush SAT & SUN, would have liked to go FRI too but couldn't get off work.

Anyone catch anything "worthwhile" heading into Selfridge today for the airshow? I heard a F-4 Corsair in the break and the I heard the call-sign "Allied 44" ( I believe) check in with the tower.

MTC Airboss freqs.

Hello all,
I was out by Selfridge today watching from Sugerbush road. Then moved closer to 21 Mile Rd when the sun swung around to the other side of the runway.

Freqs used.
128.700 Airboss.
133.325 Airboss. Used sometimes, but mainly used one above today.
349.400 Airboss UHF.
130.650 Used by P-51 during his performance. Then used by the FA-18, F4-U Corsair Heritage Flight.
119.600 318.200 MTC app.

Here's what came in today. I missed some things from early morning.
DELTA 9931 (N650DL) 757
FAST 51 WM T-38 # 268 12:17pm.
Cessna jump plane, 12:28pm. They were talking on other Airboss freq 133.325, then went to 128.700.
SOONER? 82 departed MTC to the south, I never saw it, 12:45pm.
REDEYE 91 x 4 CO F-16's (Colorado) 01:45pm. 140.200 AM mode A/A. I was having trouble hearing these guys on my PRO-97. I changed antenna's & no difference, then I looked at the display & it was in FM mode. DOH! Stupid scanner.
MOTOWN 03 (MI KC-135) arrived, 02:01pm.
P-51 performed, 02:23pm.
F-4U Corsair performed then landed, 02:37pm.
CONGO 64 departed, 03:08pm. USAF Twin Otter jump plane.
HAWK 82 (B-1 DY) 03:09pm.
C-2 COD Special markings, 03:50pm. I missed the call sign.
TUFF 14 (BD B-52) came straight in & landed, 03:57pm.
DUKE 69 (T-38) 05:15pm.
While getting something to eat I heard Texan? 064, around 06:30pm.
While at home I heard.
WILDCAT 61 x 2, 235.400 F-18's A/A, 07:50pm. 225.400 MTC twr, 07:50pm. Cleared to land, 07:53pm.

Also had an F-86 perform, & some crappy civilian stuff perform in the afternoon. ;~) Now I have to do this all over again tomorrow & get up even earlier.

Thanks for the update Chuck.
I saw the 4 16's while eating lunch at 14 & Woodward. Would have loved to see the 52 come in, won't see that very often.
I'll be at Sugarbush both days this weekend, weather looks like its going to be pretty decent. "PM storms" are predicted for tomorrow, we'll see how that goes.

Heard a new freq mentioned today when I was at the show 123.150. Some simulcast stuff on there. Show was cut short due to weather, however it was still a good time.

Was it cut due to weather ?
I thought it was just over, the 2 18's finished about 3:30.
Pretty disappointing show, the rumored bomber fly by never happened, nor was there a F-16 demo.
The 2 18's were by far the highlight of the day, and did 3 rip roaring passes.

123.15 was talked about as a discrete channel, but I can't field program my scanners so I never checked it out, will tomorrow.
Flew so many boring props that I almost fell asleep, and it seemed the sky divers would never end.

Yes, it was cut short due to weather...the F-18s were not supposed to be the final act.
The pyrotechnics were supposed to be for the final act which was some aerobatic contest....but due to the cancellation they had to set if off for the F-18s

What's up with Selfridge and the prop planes? I didn't go to the show in 2009, but i heard it wasn't that great. It sounds like this years show is the same....Prop planes are ok, but let's see some muscle - F-15s, F-16s, Harriers, A-10s, etc!

Odd, I hung out half an hour after the show, not a drop of rain. Didn't rain around Detroit to well after an hour later. Probably nervous about large public outdoor gatherings & weather due to the recent fatal stage collapse.
This is probably the worse show I have ever been to, and I'm sure I have been to well over 100, including nearly every one at Selfridge since the early 1970's. The 2 premiere acts, Tbirds & Raptor, were cancelled to no fault of their own, true ,,,, But you'd think being a military base and all with only a show every other year, they'd have more pull to pull in more military acts. The show really sucked, rain delay or not. Apparently all that was pulled was another aerobatic act.
I'm hoping tomorrow some of the jets will at least take off to head home after the show, and take off my way.

I have to agree with Xray; first thing I heard at the gate was "no camera bags allowed". First time that has happened to me. Seemed to be no reason to ban my bag as I saw a lady behind me that was allowed to bring many in a larger bag with: "just a blanket and drinks". So only one lense for my camera and no scanner. First drop of rain I saw was about 5:15.

I''ll tell ya Piston, to me, just the 3 high speed F-18 passes was worth me going, but it could have and should have been much better.
The F-86 flew too, and put on a good show, along with the Yankee B-17 and a few other warbirds.
One of the OH F-16's went up too, but didn't really do anything. He took off and was gone about half an hour, I'm guessing he did a flyby down the Dream Cruise circuit or some other event. Came back and orbited around a while, then landed. 4 A-10's did some nice passes, but A-10's, while a deadly combat jet, are really not much to look at.

The 1st high speed 18 pass was one of the fastest possible without breaking the sound barrier, which I have seen [heard] them do a few times before. Due to the muggy, humid weather, a condensation cloud erupted on the fuselage, and looked awesome.
I was watching this nearby little girl out of the corner of my eye for her reaction. She had her ears plugged well before it approached, and she was wide eyed in intimidated amazement. The sound was so powerful it knocked her down ,,, I thought she'd be crying and begging to leave, but she got up laughing, and said she hoped they'd do it again !

Another thing they need to do at Selfridge is have the A-10s do other things besides low approaches. Why not some rolls and tight turns, etc? Let's see what the A-10 can really do!

Mini gun strafing runs would be mighty impressive ... Minus the depleted uranium !
