Thanks for the information guys! Looking through my scanner collection, I have a Sony Wavehawk that looks like it covers the 300 mhz frequencies. I have never used that scanner, but I'll give it a try. I was not aware that the PRO-96 had 300 mhz coverage...

Here I was thinking I was the only one listening to these guys!

Been listening to the Selfridge and Toledo guys for years now, ever since I bought my Pro-43 back in 1994!

The actual technical name is LANTIRN, standing for Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night. More info on that is found here: http://www.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?fsID=111

292.000 was active earlier today with some practice exercise going on. It's a little hard to hear even though I'm up high; I work on the top floor of the Parklane Towers (west tower) in Dearborn, Ford Rd/Southfield Freeway (M-39). I'm fairly close to a window but there a million computers all around me and in this building, not to mention all the overhead lights, printers, steel, cement, etc.

Been reading these posts for a bit, I too have to get a new keypad for my Pro-43 as it seems to have worn out. I have to press down a little hard to get the left area of the keypad to do anything. I even took it apart and cleaned the contacts, still no change.

Last night I had some more exciting Sting activity over my house! After calling clear of the Steelhead MOA at about 9:30 pm, they were flying orbit patters (east to west clockwise) between 22,000 and 17,000 feet at 320 knots. After listening for a while longer it sounded like they were simulating air to air combat. Around 10:30 Sting quieted down on the radio and was going to RTB. The cool thing was when they were goining to RTB, the four F-16s ziped over my house in formation! What a site that was to see! At 10:45 Piston 51 from Selfridge was going up to do some refueling in the pattern (they gave no location about where the pattern was at maybe over Lk. Michigan. Now I have a question, Piston 51 mentioned they were going to be code 3 in the pattern, what is code 3?

From what I have heard over the years the Code # is a maintance code. I think Code 1 is Aircraft OK, Code 2 someting needs to fixed and Code 3 something is wrong with aircraft that is an emergency. Once again speculation on my part but your refernce to staying in the pattern would make sense if they had to burn down fuel and make an emergency landing. What freq did you hear the code stuff on ? Tower 340.700 ?

I do remember them talking on Selfridge approach and on 314.200 (the 927 ARW tac). I have a feeling they were airborne because their communications were pretty clear.

It started about 10 minutes before I posted the message. It was about 45 minutes in duration. I was able to figure out that one group was out of Ohio. Not sure about the other.
After the engagement, they flew along M59 west (made several references to the new Home Depot as well as Pontiac airport), then flew south over Willow Run.

It was interesting to hear them make reference to places that I have been. I believe that was the first time that has happened. I just wish that I were in the area at the time. Would have been neat to be able to look up and see them do a fly by.

Those freqs I listed in the article are ones I've actually heard communications on. So they should still be good.

The other frequencies posted here should keep your radio busy.
Between Toledo and Selfridge there is a lot of activity every week to listen to. You'll even hear them pop up encrypted once in awhile.

When was the last time you heard the CAP flights over Detroit? Do you know if they still fly them at all.

CAP

There was a CAP on the 13th of this month. They usually fly them when someone like the President or VP is in town.

What kind of radio talk do you hear any thing significant (codes?)? Are there any special callsigns used.

Add 254.700 AM , 228.900 and 282.600 AM to the list ... Demon , Sting and Wyatt ( Unknown ) had an exercise today over the Thumb ... All abover freqs were used to coordinate activity with NORAD ( Huntress ) ... 254.700 is a new one and was the most interesting ... talking about Bomb types and attack profiles.
