• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So, based this thread, I am considering selling this model radio. I very new to the world of radios and want to get my info right. The radio is currently programmed to our local sheriff’s dept. I looked up the frequencies here, and they are 854\854. Here’s my question. That’s obviously above 800…so, I know that I can’t put down it’s a vhf radio, would I say that it’s a 700\800 mhz or what? I have no need to keep it, because I don’t need to keep it as a scanner, and they don’t need\want it because they have newer equipment. But, I’m thinking that since it could be reprogrammed (not to vhf obviously), it’s still valuable to sell for someone else’s use.

The model # is H46UCF9PW6BN

Thanks in advance for wisdom, assistance, advice, etc. Remember, newbie here, still being educated!

If you search the model # in Google, there are many, many results that tell you exactly what the radio is capable of, as well as a ton of eBay listings giving you an idea of the value. It's not much, you'll be lucky to get maybe $100-$150 for it if it's in mint condition.

I would make sure the agency you got it from cares if you sell it. Since it's still supposedly programmed for their trunked system I'd bet they'd frown upon some stranger having it.

Based on your post, it looks like the radio is/was the property of the Sheriff's Department. Here's what I'd do before selling it:
  1. Get signed property release on Sheriff/County letterhead releasing the radio to you as "surplus property" (or the bureaucratic designation of their choice). It needs to be signed by someone with the authority to release the property to your procession. It should include the radio's S/N and any accessories.
  2. Remove all programming and system identifiers from the radio. You can do this if you have the CPS and know how, or ask the radio shop to "wipe" the radio. You can reprogram one simplex test frequency (it shouldn't conflict with any area assignments) at LOW power to prove the radio works.
These radios won't fetch a lot in the used market and you may be better off trying to trade it for something else you can use.

Yeah, taxpayer funded radio getting sold on e-Bay raises some serious concerns. If I did that with any of my radios at work, I'd be looking for a new job at best. At worst, I'd be in a lot of legal trouble.

As others said, if the Sheriffs office is OK with you selling their excess property, make sure you get it in writing. Motorola does (or did) track which serial number radios were sold to which agencies, so this radio suddenly showing up in their depot might raise some red flags. Maybe the sheriffs office doesn't care, but make sure, but make sure you cover your posterior.

Also, as said above, if the radio is programmed on their frequencies, make 100% sure you wipe the programming before selling the radio. Remove all the personalities and replace them with a single receive only personality. Not one e-Bay buyer needs access to their radio system. I always wipe our radios before sending them off to surplus. Your local sheriffs office should know this, but surprisingly a lot of them don't connect the dots.

If you are going to sell it, make sure you include the flashcode for the radio. That will be important information to anyone who is buying this radio (who actually knows what they are doing).
The radio is technically a 700/800MHz radio. Capabilities will depend on the flashcode.

Don't expect a lot of money for a used 700/800MHz radio. Not very useful to hobbyists other than for listening. Value will depend on the flashcode. Most knowledgeable buyers will consider the battery and antenna to be trashed. Essentially you are selling a used public safety radio of unknown condition.

The last XTS2500 mod II 800MHz I got off eBay was in the $60 range. I put a new case on it for $25 and it was very nice but when I was done with it and sold it at a ham swap meet programmed for all our local FD receive freqs the most I could get was $75.
