I have never heard any traffic on any of those talkgroups. So I don't think they're used (currently) for anything.

As I'm sure you know, SHEP uses the talkgroups labeled "DPS x" where x is the SCHP troop. I haven't ever figured out why SHEP, which is an SCDOT function, uses the channel labeled "DPS" which I assume refers to Dept of Public Safety (SCHP, BPS, STP, etc).

i have several questions.

1. does Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) still use the uhf frequencies listed in the database because the liscence expired in 2011. could they be on the palmetto 800 system.

2. has anyone discovered any federal talkgroups on palmetto 800 because when it was type ll there were 4 federal talkgroups for Congaree National Park.

I don't know the answers related to your questions about the Columbia Airport and federal talkgroups. Other than the FedCall talkgroup which is listed in the DB, I can't say that I've heard any fed traffic on Palmetto 800.

LifeNet operates over a pretty good part of the state. This article is a little dated, but it has a lot of good information related to medical helicopters in SC:

I don't know about the Airport either. They don't use their Pal800 Talkgroups and I haven't heard anything on UHF in a long while. They may be on DMR.

In reference to Federal there is a couple FED Call talkgroups, ATF, DEA, and CNP talkgroups but I don't believe any of them are active either.

SHEP 1 28003 Is used like a talk around you listen closely they will tell some one for example S111 to S113 go to SHEP 1 then they switch there talking about various things about picking up traffic cones or when to take a lunch break the main SHEP DPS 27108 is usually patched to Lexington hwy troop 1 dispatch. The Columbia Airport FD 460.575 is still used there really weak compared to few years ago. You have to be close to the airport to hear them. Airport Security is on 453.5875 I can hear them pretty well from my location about 7 miles from the airport.

Columbia West is Little Mountain so your best bet while on Broad River and with a mobile will carry you all the way downtown. If on an HT switch to Columbia Downtown once downtown. I live in Lexington and normally stick to Columbia East. I can reach all 3 with an HT but i'm low signal on all 3.

I don't live in the Columbia area, so this information may not be accurate. You'll want to verify for yourself.

In general, monitoring a single site at a time is an advantage. It essentially speeds up scanning because the scanner is not required to jump and retune to more than one control channel. If you're simultaneously scanning a trunked system and conventional channels from the same radio, this can be an advantage.

I've never heard voice traffic on the Columbia site. Only an active control channel. If you monitor that site, you may not hear anything.

If you're near enough to monitor Harbison, and you struggle with simulcast distorted reception from the Richland Simulcast site, then monitoring Harbison may be an advantage. I'm not sure how many Richland County talkgroups are carried on Harbison on a 24x7 basis - perhaps not talkgroups for LE regions or agencies toward the south end of the county. I believe Harbison carries a mix of Richland and Lexington talkgroups. If you're trying to listen to talkgroups from both counties, monitoring Harbison might be an advantage.
