Nope, at least not according to the pic on the Universal website. I believe it lists that as a 500 ohm input (of course, any random wire's impedance is going to vary dramatically with frequency, length, height above ground and so forth).

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Would it be possible to just use a banna clip connected to the end of the longwire and then insert that into the back of the antenna tuner into the antenna SO-239 jack? I would then use a jumper from the tuner to the receiver. This would be instead of using a balum.

Sure you can do that. I used to do that directly into the back of my receiver. Receivers aren't critical like transmitters are. Matching, loading, shielding, impedance, all of that is more important when transmitting. A shielded coax however, from the radio, or tuner, out to the antenna, will help cut down RF noise levels that are present in your home.

Hi Bob and readers,

Why buy an antenna when all you need is a roll of wire and a handful of insulators? Don't let these guys confuse you, read up on the subject, learn a bit about resonance and basic radio theory, pick up your impliments of destruction and go to town.

After your education if you have any specific questions by all means ask, as you can see asking such an ambiguous question only opens a confusing can of worms. Study first, ask later, that's how it's done in school, that's how it's done.

No ones confusing him. That was already suggested, and he tried it without satisfactory results. Now he is progressing to other methods.

Good point Bill, I have read as much information I can get my hands on about antenna theory and at this point I'm trying to improve on what I currently have in place. I’ll admit I need to try and digest some of it a little more before asking questions, but I think asking questions part learning. Although everyone has their own slant as to what is best, I think the basic idea is still not lost.

A couple of years ago I might have just gotten a roll of wire and strung it around the house and called it a day, but now I'm working on get the most out of with I have in place.

Again I really appreciate all the information from everyone in this and other threads. I think after reading some of the information on the net I'm able to get better and more precise answers from the individuals in these threads. I wasn’t trying to waste anyone’s time asking basic questions’ but I a little new to HF listening. I’ve mostly been involved with UHF/VHF scanning and I’m just now trying to learn more about HF radio.

BTW-Bill, Thanks for the literature you dropped in the mail for me. That will help.
