They can toggle it because I have also heard encryption on occasion.
I remember the same setup on their old VHF channel.

It depends sometimes the RTO's seem to run encrypted for a period of time and then back in the clear the same appears to happen with the field units who seem to forget to switch back from encrypted to clear.

Have them programmed up, not hearing much traffic on channel 1. Do they dispatch on the other channels now also? This is my first time listening on the new UHF system.

I listened to them once, the dispatcher was encoded, but the mobiles were in the clear (mostly).
When SVPD started using their new UHF frequencies in July of 2006 they did a LOT of that bouncing back and forth and mixing/matching encrypted and unencrypted between the units and the dispatchers. Then they kind of settled down to unencrypted for most activity. Just making sure everybodys' radios are working consistently in both modes, maybe?

I hear a few dispatches, but not as many as I used to on the old VHF system, unless a lot of calls are going through the MDC and not even being voiced. Do they ever dispatch on the other 4 channels?

Most all MDC calls are also voiced out on the radio. Back to the original post I think it's up to the individual officer for s/he may have there car radio DES button on but not there HT. The same seems to be with the dispatchers one may like to screw with the listening public and be encoded and then when s/he is on break or shift change then they are in the clear.

Same here with San Gabriel PD. Their dispatchers love to be unpredictable with the encryption switch. At least one HT there is encrypted all the time.

Ok so I am new to Simi Valley and this is the first time ive had to deal with p25, as San Diego is not using it yet. I thought my scanner was broke, but it sounds like everyone is hearing the same thing i am with the half encrypted talking. So i guess im not loosing my mind, they are encrypting some of the calls?

You are not going insane, Simi Valley does the same thing like San Gabriel does sometimes. Sometimes the dispatcher is encrypted, sometimes the officers are encrypted on one side. At least its better than full blown encryption.

Agreed. If only the PSR 500 would mute encryption. Then my girlfriend wouldn't hate my scanner.

Their dispatch has been encrypted since Monday when that ex-football player went missing, but as it turned out he really wasn't. Everyone else on the radio system is in the clear though... doesn't make any sense to me.

One of the guys at HRO Burbank told me today that Simi PD “will be going encrypted” but didn’t say when. The implication was full-time encrypted. Everything.

That’s too bad.
