Thanks. Looks like the SDS-100 can do absolutely anything I might encounter. I see the price, so I guess all that versitility does cost. Appreciate your advice as I get back into things.
I live in Berkeley Springs , just up the valley from you about an hour and use a bcd325p2 for portable & a bcd996p2 for mobile all day long , works very well on SIRN, few , if any of their sites are simulcast. I also do a prolific amount of military air monitoring in the area and up and down the east coast and both do very well at that also. There is also more than a few VHF and UHF public safety frequency's still in use throughout the area. If you'd like to communicate more on the public safety frequencies & military air frequencies in the area I'd be glad help you out with that. I'm currently out of the area in Arkansas , helping a church with a building project but I'll be back at the end of next week.

I'm in Augusta, and I know those PRO-106s are pretty long in the tooth, but I use my old PSR-500s everyday, and they're fine for most of the SIRN county stuff. I've only heard TDMA infrequently on WVSP talkgroups, so far. I can program those 106s for you while you're shopping for a new Phase 2-capable scanner. I have the WIN500 Starrsoft programmer, and can add the Lost City site, and whatever else you need added.

The SDS-100 is a great recommendation--I have the desktop version, SDS-200--and it's very nice. My personal fav remains the BCD996P2 desktop--but I also use it's handheld equivelent, the BCD325P2--it's a good performer, too.

One other thing you might consider is the Unication pagers--they are great pieces of commercial kit--and are rock solid on SIRN. They are also immune to any simulcast, but that isn't really a concern in this area. I have a G3 (VHF/UHF) and a G5 (UHF/800)--they cost about the same as the SDS-series scanners. They are not scanners, and have a fairly steep learning curve when it comes to programming--but I've run them side-by-side with SIRN-issued radios, and they don't miss a beat.

Anyways, let me know if you need any help with the 106 programming.

Thanks for the offer. I just learned that ScannerMaster folks say their ARC500 software will program my old PRO-106, so I've ordered it. I'll get that going and check in with you later. Good luck in Arkansas.

Thanks, Mark. I may now be able to solve that programming issue myself with the ScannerMaster ARC500 program, which I ordered this morning. Similar to WIN500 but supposedly has a better user interface. Will check in with you guys once I get things set up again, soon. I reads the traffic hear re the Lost River site. I also need to add the new Wardensville site, which is LOS a mile from my living room window. Got the info and the radio, just need the software to arrive.

Forgot to post this before, noticed TG 1744 active in the last week or so. It has always been patched to Morgan County TG 1707.

Interestingly, a couple pending apps for the Marlinton site:

One to the existing WRYJ775 license:
- adding 155.295 and 155.97 (I've seen entities piggyback conventional repeaters on a trunked license before)
460.100 FB8
460.125 FB8
460.2375 FB8
460.375 FB8
460.4375 FB8
460.575 FB8
155.295 FB2
155.97 FB2

And a new one, same Marlinton site:
154.19 FB8
154.2125 FB2
154.1375 FB2
155.8425 FB2

Make what you will of that mess. Both licenses are trunked licenses. So you'll just have to see how it shakes out.

Mike

So the UHF license WRJY775 has all of its 450 mhz frequencies removed, or at least had all it's frequencies removed.

And the VHF trunked license referenced above I can't get the status of because the FCC is overburdened apparently lol. But earlier this morning I saw a new submission for the same VHF frequencies on a trunked license for Marlinton.

154.19
154.2125
154.1375
155.8425

And there are two VHF frequencies left on the WRJY775 UHF trunked license:

155.295
155.97

So it looks like they are making the decision to go with a VHF trunked site for Marlinton

Mike

I've noticed Monroe and Summers are using SIRN much more heavily now. Was a new site added in this area? Seems like I remember discussion but cannot find it now.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to my November question (above) about renewing my Pro-106 for Hardy County monitoring.

Problem solved.

I turned 80 about two weeks ago and my family threw a party. Without input from me and with no other scanner listeners in the family they decided I needed a new radio and bought me an SDS-100 by pooling resources. Total surprise for me...my wife must have read my research.

Figuring out how to use it. Will take a while. Getting excellent local results just inputting my Zip code. Expanded the range out to 50 miles but thinking of shortening that. Not hearing anything on either WVSP/Romney or Hardy Sheriff...have they gone encrypted in my absence?

The SDS-100 seems to be a real battery hog with all that internal processing. Might invest in a spare battery and charger at some point.

Must load the software and update the firmware and data base. I'm operating now with whatever was in the device when it left Uniden. Thanks again for your help.

Steve,

I hear WVSP Romney here in MTB loud and clear.

Do you have the Sentinel software? If not, you can get it here: https://info.uniden.com/twiki/bin/view/Unidenman4/BCDx36HPSentinel

I would "guess" that the firmware is not up to date.

If you need some help, just ask, we have a lot of good people on this thread!!

Carl

Steve-
You have a great family--please let me know if they want to adopt me! Glad you're up and running again.

As @spanner said, you should be able to hear WVSP just fine, and you should also be hearing Hardy Co. Sheriff, too. You may want to ensure that all the "Service Types" are selected in the menu. I had a similar issue when I bought my SDS-200--some of the service types had been turned off, and I was going nuts trying to find why I couldn't hear some departments.

Here's a really good resource for quick & searchable help with your new scanner--I use it all the time:

Enjoy your new toy, and happy new year to you!

Thanks, Mark. I do have the Easier to Read manual and like it. I went through the Service Type yesterday and corrected a few things. It's possible that WVSP will appear by magic after I load the new firmware and database.

By the way...I am on a ridge and another ridge about a mile away has the SIRN transmitter. Needless to say, I kinda hear that one now....

Hi Steve-

Once you update the service types & firmware, you should double-check to ensure that you have all of the Hardy SIRN sites in your programming: Wardensville, Lost City, and Moorefield. As I'm sure you're aware, these are the sites that should carry the WVSP & Hardy Co. traffic you want to hear. I've never used the zip code method of programming my SDS-200, but I'd check the basics, to ensure those three sites--or at least the site you're closest to--is contained in that zip code programming profile.

If you end up programming your scanner with Sentinel, it will most likely program all three sites into one favorites list. I would suggest programming them into three, separate favorites lists, as suggested in the "Easier to Read" guide (see section under multi-site programming), and add a quick key for each of those lists, so you can turn them on or off with a quick key press. This will allow you to see which of the three sites are best for your location, as you move about the county. This is also why I always have my RSSI meter in the SDS-200 display, which is very customizable.

Hardy Co. is unique--lucky you--there was a definite "dead zone" along Rt. 259, south of Corridor H, heading into Virginia, that the Moorefield and Wardensvilles sites couldn't effectively handle.

If all else fails, and you still cannot copy WVSP & Hardy Co., I'm happy to share a scanner profile with you that you can use to double check.

Take care,

Thanks, Mark. Should have thing updated by the end of the week. I do a lot of MilAir and civilian air listening, too, so there will be some customization coming.
