Can anyone tell me how to get Skywave Linux to run on a linux system.
I've tried several methods from the net but none of them work for me.
Silly thing is, I had it running on another system in the past but can't remember how.

What exactly do you need help with? I've used it before and I don't remember it being any different from lots of other linux distros.

Well as I understand it, you don't actually install it, as run it from within another distro.
I may have got it totally wrong though.
Installing Skywave Linux
I've spent most of the day reading stuff on the net about it.
Unfortunately, linux is not my first language.

Yep thats pretty much how I remember it.
The version I am trying to install is later than that.
Maybe I just got a corrupt download.
I'll start again and download another.

I played with Skywave for a while in the form of a bootable CD. It actually worked quite well.. My Nooelec USB dongle worked as soon as I plugged it in.

The only way you can run it "inside" of another linux distro is through a virtual machine. Just download the ISO and spin it up in one.

You can also run it live from a USB thumb drive without having to even install it. Instructions are here. Ventoy is the easiest method, you just install Ventoy to your thumb drive, then drag and drop the ISO to your thumb drive, and then boot it.

You make it sound so easy, as I said linux is not my first language.
When I get to this part, my brain turns off:

"All you need to do is start ventoy in the terminal, setting it to prepare the correct drive, and wait."

I've downloaded another iso.
I'll write that to a usb with rufus as as I have allways done with other distros.
I'll report back on the result.

Make your USB bootable ISO. then :

  1. Insert your USB stick (or DVD) into the computer.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Before your computer boots your current operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux) you should see your BIOS loading screen. Check the screen or your computer’s documentation to know which key to press and instruct your computer to boot on USB (or DVD).

Skywave is a full blown Operating System in itself. The Distro is base on Ubuntu 14.10. If you dont understand what a Distro is , there are a number of sites only for Linux, check some out. I am not a Linux guru but I have played with a number of Distro's and am familiar with some aspects of Linux.

Learn a new language, Linux can be fun.

I have installed many distros of Linux including Skywave on a former system.
The laptop I am trying to install it on currently has a Lubuntu version, working fine.
I have just downloaded another skywave 4.1.0 iso.
Written to usb with Rufus.
Booted laptop from usb
Starts off ok, goes through a couple of screens of large text and stops on a screen of small text.
Last entry is:

[ 3.569395] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCHI removable disk

The current Lubuntu distro on the system was installed by the same method without issues.
I will try burning the iso to a dvd and see if that makes any difference.

Make sure your USB is formatted to FAT32.
Have you tried another USB port ?

Hit the ESC key when it gets to that point and see if it will display the full boot log.

The usb was formatted in fat32 as default.
Tried all usb ports.
Hitting the ESC key only runs a row of symbols along the bottom.
The DVD result was the same with a different bottom row.
The current Lubuntu distro is now showing some system problem errors.
Not worrying too much about that.

Going to try formatting the Hard Drive & start from there.

Have had similiar problem with a Dell E5520 laptop installing Linux Mint. A hardware memory conflict with a WiFi module. Removed back cover and uninstalled the module to get Linux Mint to work. Also encountered an issue with UEFI and legacy boot. Disabled UEFI to get Linux to work properly. Things to look out for if you are running out of ideas.

UEFI will work, but only if the installer is booted in UEFI mode. I don't use Mint or Skywave, but have UEFI booted other distros.

Well formatting the hard drive didn't make any difference.
This system is pre UEFI
Just about to admit defeat.

When you boot, can you edit the boot parameters and add ahci=off to it?
