After reading loads and loads of reviews, I decided to go with the Radio Shack Pro-106 digital scanner. I have been out of scanning for a while (my last scanner was a Uniden BearCat 100XLT !). A lot has changed.

I would like to get some software to assist with programming. Does anyone have any recommendations ?

Check this page on the WIKI:

Pro-106 - The RadioReference Wiki

Edit: Actually, this page is the one that goes into detail about the software:

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Object_Oriented_Scanner_Software

There's information there about all of the software available for the Pro-106. They all provide a free trial period so you can make a decision for yourself about which works best for you.

The three main programs are:

Arc500 (from GRE GRECOM RadioShack PRO-106 PRO106 PRO-197 PRO197 PSR-500 PSR-600 PRO-106 PRO106 PRO-197 PRO197 PSR500 PSR600 Software)

PSREdit (from PSREdit - Configuration Editors for the new GRE line of scanners)

Win500 (from Software for RadioShack PRO-series (PRO-92, 93, 95, 96, 97, 99, 163, 164, 106, 197) and GRE PSR-series (PSR-500, 600, 300, 400) scanners)

As others have said, all offer a 30-day trial period, and you should definitely try them all. They're all fine programs and, for casual users, can do basically the same things. The CEOs of these companies all participate in this forum and regularly answer (and often do upgrades to the software) in response to users' questions.

Which package you choose is really a matter of which interface you feel most comfortable with. Personally, I prefer Win500 over the other two. Also, the advantage of Win500 is that most people around here use it, so if you're looking for a pre-made file with frequencies in your area, you're more likely to find it available.

All the software basically does the same thing. It's best to take advantage of the free trials and decide for yourself. WIN-500 has a couple unique features, but I found PSREdit-500 was best for my requirements.
