I have ordered a couple of Retevis NR40 radios. When I go on the Retevis site, and look for programming software, I don't see any listed for this radio. I have messaged them about this, but so far, haven't received a reply. Has anyone had any success programming these?

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.
To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.
The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Retevis Software for Retevis NR40?

Retevis came through. They provided a download link.
It is called NR40 CPS 1.1.5
They seem pretty solid and well made. They have a good feel in the hand. They don't have as much receive volume as I would like. I like the way the display is made into the front, and doesn't have a separate window. I haven't used DMR much at all, and the voice has a weird quality to me. The scan speed is pretty slow. It offers what appears to be voice inversion in analog mode. I haven't tried it yet, but I believe it will be simple to program out of band. The frequencies are all in ascii in the code plug. Looks like the encryption key is that way as well. The keys are generated within the CPS itself, and probably aren't all that secure. I also like the fact that the battery has a type "C" USB jack for easy charging from a phone charger. The programming, and accessory connector reminds me of the Motorola Visar. If you buy 2, they come with a programming cable. I plan on using mine on GMRS. There are a couple of open repeaters nearby. Yes, I know they are not type accepted for part 95.

I also just ordered this, you can make encryption keys with this website, Encryption Key Generator | AES-256, 256-bit, 32-byte Keys | Free & Secure, I was also confused when I tried out the software and wanted to add a custom aes key, turns out you need something specific like these hex strings, any updates on the radio? Mines arriving somewhere next month as a replacement for my RT83
When I tried changing the key in the CPS, I couldn't get it to work. Honestly, I didn't spend much time trying. The CPS generates new keys itself if you delete ones it has and hit the "New Key" option. When I tried using a website to generate keys, I get strings that included symbols. I don't think the CPS would accept those, only straight hex. There are sites that will let you generate truly random hex sequences of any length.
If the CPS won't let you put one of those in, I am pretty sure a little digging with a hex editor, like Hex workshop, will let you find the key in the code plug, so you can change it. I would be interested in hearing about what success you have with this.
Maybe they updated the software because when I tried adding custom keys that I got with that website it worked fine. I added 8 different keys, 64 long
edit: I also have RETEVIS CPS 1.1.5, and yes if you just use a normal password it will not work, you have to use hex like that website I sent, it makes strings like 1b4a75f4121cea3c0903a432638676993da2775d5dd8fc95b95490d1196d5f4a which the software does like (don't use this one for anything other than testing), try it out

I stand corrected. I have that same version of CPS. I didn't really fool with the encryption stuff all that much, since it isn't legal on either amateur or GMRS. I haven't actually used the radios yet. I thought I would, but it hasn't turned out that way. Good to know that if I want to use a custom key, and that is really the only way, I can do it .
